I was just wondering if anyone has any pictures or information on putting rollcages/rollbars in Model A coupes. I'm not looking to p*** tech inspections or anything I'm just looking for a little more safety in a tin box. It will be chopped a few inches and channeled a few inches so spare room will be minimal to begin with.

I did a few searches but havent found much info on the subject. Any information, pictures or input would be appreciated.

See if you can score a NHRA rule book at a ch***is shop and that will have some pics and rules written in blood that you can go by/mod to suit your car. I would tie the seat mounts/seat belts to the cage for a start. swing out bars will be a must I presume, I can hardly get in mine with a bad knee with no cage. I look forward to seeing some pics on this thread.

    hey..
I made a loop bar from frame to inside roof behind(braces going to frame in rear) seat then a pipe from center of that to p*** side frame rail ( can be removed)
Have another loop from frame goes across front behind windshield. This loop and rear loop are tied together by pieces that run near roof.
Did cut down on the room a little. the cross brace really takes room from p*** side..but can be removed..
    Has p***ed tech at IHRA
No pictures as kid has camera. will be home soon an can take pics if you want
I think the main thing is tucking pipe close to body as possible
Don't know if I'm clear or not as tired

If you email it to buzzard@kontinentals.com , I'll post it here.

DW's wife is gonna build him one after his 11.05 run yesterday.:)

  11. Here's a four point roll bar that surp***es most roll bar's built back in the day - when a 4 pointer was legal at the strip.

    2 1/2" x .120 wall DOM tubing.
Mandrel bent at an oil field tubing shop in Signal Hill, California.
There are similar tube bending shops all over the country.
    Especially near the oil patch.

What's nice about this roll bar is that it would work well in coupes.
The two rear legs are welded to the main vertical's just below the ****pit rail, high enough so they have good leverage.
The base of all the tubes are welded to a 1/4" plate with two 1/2" holes.
Said plates bolt to the frame which has threaded weld bungs welde in.
The plates also have a machined step and wouldn't pull through if they were not welded.

The removable bar is an advantage at times and imo a lot stronger than simply welding the tube to the 1/8 thick frame rails in most cars.

It is chromed, but only down to just above the back bars where they weld on.
The straight back bar's mount to the frame at an angle just short of where the frame breaks over the axle to level and then starts down.

Pic's will give you an idea of how well the driver fit's.
The pic of my younger daughter shows that she fits's well.
As do I seen on the return road at the airport drags couple weeks back.

When the B-25 staged . . . we got out of the way.:D

S&W Race Cars out of Pa. made my cage. They had the dimensions on file. They were very helpful during installation. Best of all the cage is NHRA Legal.

The Vicky certainly conforms to NHRA better. But a retrofit cage like yours should be safer than none. Cool car, by the way.

The cages are fine, but you may wish to consider 5 point seat belts too. They'll hold you in the seat and not allow you to go into the steering wheel. Along the lines of safety if you're going this far... and that is with high back seats. If you got rear ended it'll help prevent you from getting a very bad whip lash.

Those pics I sent you, you'll see what I mean.

32highboy and a few of us are building one for his coupe.
I will make sure he posts on here.
We used 1"x2" tubing for most of the stuff.
He is wanting the same thing. Just make sure the thing doesn't blow to pieces if there was to be an accident (god for bid).

    Just some food for thought.
If you are going to be building a cage anyway, make it legal for drag racing. Maybe not the full on 12 cage that would be legal for a nine second car, just a well thought out cage made from the correct materials to be legal for the speed you anticipate your car will run. Get a NHRA or IHRA rule book, depending on the speed of the car you may need only a 6 point roll bar. If you take the time to do your research now you will have a rollbar/cage that will improve safety, make the ch***is work better and give you more options as to where you can take your car to play.

I agree. I put a NHRA/IHRA legal 8 point roll bar in my C10 pickup good to 9.99 in the 1/4. My only thing I don't like is the two bars out the back window. I want to put a roll bar in my 28 closed cab pickup but I don't want the rear bars out the back.
