can i or should i cut the end off my pitman arm and weld another end on it? here is where i am at, have 78 pontiac steering box on my 41 ford, the 41 tierod end is bigger then the hole in the pontiac pitman arm. can i cut the end off the arm and weld the 41 fords end on it? if so would it be safe to do? i did go to a machine shop to see if they would drill it out bigger but they didn,t want to mess with it, i also went to a auto parts to see if i could match a chevy tierod end to the ford drag link, no luck there. anybody have this problem and if so, how did you fix it.
why not retaper the hole? be a damn site safer than splicing a new end on it.... reason i say this is, if you have to ask if you can, you better not do it.... i'm not worried about YOUR ***, it's the people you hit...
Speedway Motors sells the drill bit with the proper taper for redrilling steering arms for that tie rod. The part number 910-89411 and here is the link: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/2918,27_Ball-Joint-Tapered-Reamers.html?itemNo=91089411
It is very common to weld a new end on to an old arm for converting to Toyota steering box on 48-60 ford trucks.
Probably your best bet, instead of spneding $80+shipping for a 1 use item, without experience you may goof it and ruin the arm. Make sure you set him up with a few cold ones for helping out!
