It may be that your computer cannot handle the file due to requirements of the program. You should be able to find out by going to where you downloaded the file and see if your computer meets up with what the program needs.

Jeff (can I call you Jeff?)
Does this program create huge file sizes?
I know it depends on what size and dpi you are trying to work with. What I mean is a file that you can take and reproduce at a decent size. 300dpi and up and 11X17 for instance.

  12. dig it.

I used photoshop and illustrator extensively in college (photography/graphic arts major), but since I graduated in 99, I haven't done a single thing with it.

    Inspiring for sure.

Maybe I'll go pick up a MAC and some programs...

    Sure you can.

Painter create massive files if saved as a psd file
IF you save as a native riff.... cuts the size.

Your art also gave me a blast back to the 60's and my youth, that style that I remember so well from Roth is my all time favorite!

From the prepress production side, traditional art pieces are a lot of work. Always seems we have to end up having them shot by a professional photographer and then color corrected to death.

I know you touched on all the old car ads and I am amazed at all the design that was done in the 50s and 60s. I'm surprised that the they can get the stuff cut out and seperated using the old techniques. It is quickly becomeing a lost art with all the Computer To Plate systems out there now in printing. Yeah 200 line, 4 color printing on a coated stock looks nice on some stuff but there is so much character in the old duo-tones printed at 75 line w/ mechnical striping and trapping. It really takes a lot of work to make something look anywhere close to as old as the magazines from the 50s and 60s.

Awesome tech BTW. and I agree 100% about a computer is only a tool.

  20. Jeff, your work is spot on with Large Fathers stuff. I've always loved his work. With guys like you around his style will never die. I'm going to have to buy that catalog just for your art work on the cover !! :D

Let me pile on my 2 pennies.

I just got grief from someone when they saw me using a lightbox....I was like uuuh, hey this is the way it USED to be done. I'm not "cheating" when I trace my own artwork!!!

And I have been on the receiving end of some difficult-to-deal-with artwork when I was in the sign business. Believe me the printers appreciate the technology in place nowadays.....

I am actually shocked that Jeff is using Photoshop/Corel - and not some kind of vector based application - though I guess I can see how it works in this case. ;)

(man I can't wait to get myself a Wacomb!!!)

    Jeff,
I just caught this tech. FANTASTIC JOB!!! What is your favorite pen tool in Painter. I have been working with it for a year to do color studies for my airbrush work. I love the program. You have captured traditional painting appearances very well with the program. Do you do the black and white work in a B/W document and then paste into a new full color document before you start the color. I hope I asked the right. Or are you simply setting your pen too such that you get no Gray?

Thanks for taking the time to share some of your technique.

Notwell, just the tutorial alone, is a giant humanitarian gesture of all consuming love. Do you sleep?

  27. Jeff,

Awesome stuff! Thanks for the post. Can I get the same results in Photoshop? What with the custom tools and all...

I got the feeling I have barely scratched the surface of that program...

    You rule.

    Thanks Man!

I must say I love the pastels and chalks with this program..... they seem to be an unending "surprise" tool.

I just work straight in color and go from there... in Painter, you can work in all greys(albeit cool or warm greys)Older versions would not let you import greyscale documents into painter..... but versions 7 to 10 will allow this.
I started with this program waaay back when it was Painter 4.
now I work in Painter 10.
I hope that answered your question.

    Hey Burny.... many thanks buddy.

To me.... this is a loaded question... personnally....I would say no....I found that Photoshop has zero pen sensitivity,... now saying that.....I have quite a few scribblin friends that use Photoshop exclusively!!
And there results are very dramatic.
And in the newer CS2(prolly CS1 as well) All the tools can be modified and customized for the user.
So,being totally fare....I never have experimented with Photoshop in that way,....
My dream would be for ADOBE to buy Painter from Corel and make a KILLER version!

    ha hahah

One last note.....Painter and Photoshop are pixel based programs... where as Illustrator is a vector based.
Vector images can be the size of a postage stamp and be blown up to the size of the golden gate bridge without any distortion.
    Pixel based cannot.
....... therefore, sizing and dpi but be close to what the final will be.
Saying that....I have done imagery for Billboards and transit stuff that can be down at a small scale and a decent dpi with oout too much hassle.A good pre press person can help with this.
I have done some digital files that were increase twice the original size without being too pixilized.

    hope that helps fellas:)

And a final note.....As I have stated.. this is just a tool, and there are many other waysto do this digitally or traditionally.the more you se this tool, the better you get at it.

Now,I gotta go find my Black India ink and ink up a original for a customer.

    vroom,vroom baby.
