  1. Don't think that'll cut it:
Lost a really nice '62 beetle to a fuel leak fire.

Did I mention it had a full tank?

Multiple big extinguishers were emptied... that fire just laughed at us and kept on going.

My car is insured properly. Even that 32 is replaceable if it was insured properly. If somebody got hurt, That would be REALLY sad.

I live half a block from an elementary school where my 3 children attended. My street deadends at the entrance to the school parking lot/dropoff zone. From the time we moved in 30+ years ago, the "mommies" and "daddies" too race down the street because they are late, scaring the bejesus out of kids walking down the sidewalks and neighbors trying to back out to go to work, and after dropping the little darlings off...they race around the block and run the stop signs crossing the same street they themselves raced up. Over the years no one has been killed but many have been injured (both adults and children) when these "loving parents" play dumbass with their cars.
I have come to believe that there is no more dangerous place for children on the way to school than being in their own parent's cars in a school zone.
Not a good place for Deuce coupes either.

That REALLY sucks! I'm glad the occupants will be OK. What a shame that a real steel 32- 3 window is gone. Almost irreplaceable. If everyone drove a 'glass repop like me, it woudn't be such an issue to replace.

Let us know if the car can be saved. I thought the fibreglass would melt down to a crisp.

I hope we see pictures of the new restoration sometime next year.

Dam thats a shame..hope all got out alright..
not that its important now, but with the other threads on here about safety gear extinguishers and the such, one thing came up about old A fuel tank placement and the possibilities of fire in a crash such as this.
does anyone know if this was the cause or reason for this fire?
also having really bright tail lights is a plus!..but still no excuse for raming this guys ass like that!..i believe this should be criminally punished for the total disreguard for the persons in this cars safety. if any gender was on the cell phone or distracted other wise and caused this type of damage..in my opinion they are a menace..and should not be allowed back out on the road to kill or mame again..revocation of drivers licence for minimum 1 to 2 years!
all retribution and damages payed up in full to the persons at loss. than have a hearing as. if that person has learned their lesson about distracted driving and the damage it can cause..

We can keep going on and on about what a bad driver she is ( and she probably is...)

    But she is not alone.
There are lots of them out there.

So what would be possible to improve the situation?

What if you had a Racecar Fuelcell Bladder made to fit a Deuce Tank?

    Would that help?

I bet you could put one in, without it being very noticeble.
And there must be enough Deuces on the road to bring the costs down ( custom made one-off Fuelcells are really expensive...)

    EDIT.

So sad that a coupe like this has lasted 75 years to be destroyed by some jerk with his head in the wrong place...

That makes me want to mount my gas tank in the rearmost point of my car, right about bumper height.

sad it happened at all, a similar accident happened to a friend of mine same type of deal, the driver could not see his old time "original" rear brake lights (to small, to dim and mounted too low). remember in this day and age with cell phones and all the other distractions people aren't looking for those nostalgic ,discolored ,junk yard find, rear tail light len's. do yourselves a favor and invest in LED's or find a way to convert the old style to be more visable light. think of current cars most have 3 stop light in the rear and thats what people are used to.
    just my $.02

16 year old girl in a new cavalier on her cell phone nearly totaled one of my customer's cars, as he was leaving our shop with it! 69 Roadrunner, really nice car. Sshe did like 25k damage to a car that had almost 0 miles on it. (nobody hurt) It took about a year of going back and forth with the insurance company to get it paid for, but they did...It was unbelievable to see it happen before my eyes, but its proof that this stuff happens all the time...
Anybody remember that Duesenberg that got hit by the cement truck a little while back?...Killed several people...

My son plays a game with me in the car.....we try to see how many women in giant SUV's are putting on make up and talking on the cell phone while driving. We also play "important business man", which is frequently a guy in a lexus looking at his laptop while on the phone (and driving). What a waste of a car.

I was thinking like metalshapes - better gas tank technology. No good place to put a tank on a '32. And carrt a fire extinguisher no matter how big the last fire was. After it is empty you can beat the idiot who ran into you with it.

I read an article about this and I believe it said the fire started in the engine compartment... I think they said the fuel inlet on the carb was knocked off and spewed on the headers?

Maybe a checkvalve in the fuel line might have saved it?

Burnt cars are pretty hard to fix. Even if they're not warped. It depends on how hot it really got.

I wish him luck, but sheet metal changes properties once it gets real hot and isn't very strong or workable after that.....
