I still have problems with my truck's 700 r4, but I found a 1965 Chrysler Newport 4 door locally for cheap. It is in great shape just needing a few odds and ends and it will be a fun cruiser to putt around town in. Ok, I bought the car, took it for the test drive, the brakes are leaking apparently, since the lady i bought it from had to fill the brake booster with fluid. All else is good, I get it home about 10-15 miles away and let it sit for about an hour or two in my driveway. When my wife gets home I take her out for a spin. I feel it slipping a little, but my powerglide in my old malibu did that too. I take off from a stop sign and get goin drive is gone, I luckily make it to a gas station. We get a ride home, go to dinner and then come back I put a lil fluid in it and i had a weak feeling reverse but still no drive. Had to push it and coast it home in the rain. What a day.
Any ideas on the transmission? I think its a 727 as i have drive then a 2 and 1. Really weird to just stop working. I do believe it was sitting for a while before I got it. This is my first Mopar and I have only owned Chevs and Buicks before this. Please Help

    Yeah, its a 727

My 1st guess would be that the kickdown linkage was not adjusted
    correctly

when its not .. you end up like this

Maybe, possibly ..if you are lucky, you can adjust high gear band
But, most likely, she is cooked

Drop the pan and change the fluid and filter. If it has been sitting for a while, the filter has probably plugged up and the fluid can't get through. 727's are tough old transmissions and are about the easiest transmissions to rebuild, should it need it.

I'm betting on the filter. Gene

Should take about 10 qts to refill after draining it, I think that includes the torque converter too (there's a drain plug on it you can get to from the front bottom after removing the cover plate, and slowly turning the engine till you see the plug).

Get a big drain pan, like one of those plastic tubs they use for bussing tables at a restaurant. If you're lucky and there's a drain plug in the pan, first drain the trans. Take off the pan bolts, and remove the pan, you'll probably get messy doing this. Drain the torque converter. Unscrew the filter, install the new one. Clean off the pan gasket surfaces completely. See if you need to flatten the pan gasket surface, if so us a hammer to carefully knock the bolt hole area back down flat. Install the pan and new gasket. Make sure the converter drain plug is back in place.

Pour 4 quarts into the trans, then start the engine and add a quart at a time, and check the fluid level between adding quarts. It helps to first put the brake on and run the shifter from P to L and back to P, to let it getoil to the working parts, before checking the level. When it starts to "grab", then you know it's getting close to full, so go carefully so you dont' over fill it.

If the trans is fried, then the old oil will smell burned, and you might as well not worry about it, you'll need to get the trans rebuilt.

I agree with squirrel, only make sure you check the oillevel in "N", not "Park". The oil doens't get pumped around (much) in "P" as it does in Neutral.

If the current ******-oil is still bright red, smells 'ok' and the pan doesn't have scary stuff in there, I wouldn't even bother draining the convertor.

Make sure the kickdown-linkage is properly mounted and adjusted.

Changed the filter today, and luckily no metal in the fluid at all
the filter was gunked up real bad though. I drove her around the block and all seemed well. Thanks for all your help. You don't know how happy i was when it moved after putting it in Drive.

  10. I had a later 727 quit on me simply because it was low on fluid. I got the truck for $50 because of that - once it got hot, it didn't go. Fluid and filter and add the missinbg like 4 quarts or so and it was fine. The kickdown linkage was messed up on it too, but I drove it a few thousand miles before I sold it for the beater I have now.
