I bought an 8 3/4 rear out from under a 60 Fury to run in my Henry J. This axle has a nut and shims at the end of the axle to adjust the end play. My question is, has anybody ran one of these behind a big block without having any problems? It will be behind a 440 with a 727 in front of it. I have a late model Camaro rear under the car now, and it has already tore up the pinion bearing.
Heck that's what came with the Max Wedge cars when they were new. Tapered axles were it unti '65.There is nothing wrong with them except they are a pain if you are changing rear end ratios often. our little Henry J won't give it ay problem. Use it, beat it, don't worry; be happy!
Those rear ends are not as strong as the later ones. The 65 are not tapered and are a lot stronger. Guys that build maxwedge cars always change the rear for a later one for that reason.
Shit I think I screwed up. I think Storm king is correct. They were changed because they suck to change the center section when changing gears.
The fix here is to simply get aftermarket Moser axles for a mopar 8 3/4 housing. They'll fit right in after you pull the old axle seal out, eliminate the adjusters with green bearings, and you'll have a much stronger setup. The centersections on those old units are the same as a 742 later model, and are every bit as rugged.
