So I wanted some advice on different paint schemes. I was qouted at 3 grand to paint my 54 cadillac a primer rootbeer brown with a pearl creme top. Apparently this is a hell of a bargain for the finished product I will receive. My questions is. Is it worth the money. Pros and Cons with primer paint. Things of that nature. ^_^

Last car I primered was 2 years ago. Cost about $22.

  3. if it is a high quality primer with sealer it should hold up good. I would recomend Sikkens Colorbuild sealer primer, thats what i use if i'm going to leave a car in primer and drive it.

I'm going to ***ume that the "pearl creme top" is going to be a full-fledged paint scheme. You know... sealer(maybe), base coats, pearl coats, and lastly clear coats. Obviously all of this would be followed up the next day with a healthy dose of "cuttin' n rubbin'" to make it all purty-like. If my ***umption is correct, then 3K doesn't sound too steep...

If I'm way off and the paint shop is quoting you 3K to mask up your Caddy and do a two-tone primer job... they should throw in a tube of KY Jelly and something to bite down on.

Well the top is most definitely a full fledged paint job. Only the body is primer. But I just dont feel comfortable having only primer on the body. Id like to have more. Like a suede paint.
But 3k just sounds so steep for primer. No what I mean?
    Im skeptical.

You will want to protect the primer or it will just fade more and more every year, plus primer is not a sealer, your body will continue to rust of its not a sealer. You can use certain paints with a flat clear coat over them and they will appear to be flat like primer only with the protection of a claer and it will last because its paint, not primer. I still think 3G`s is alot for a paint job, but I`ve never let anyone paint for me. But then again depending on how good your painter is, it might be worth it! go down and talk to a good Autobody and Paint Supply place and talk to the guys about your color idea`s. If the shop is worth a **** they will know just how to give you the results your looking for because most of them will have painted cars for several years before retiring to selling paint. And you can price your paint, oif the paint is $200.00 and the guy is charging 3000 grand then you might want to reconsider. Just my .02 Cents...

I'm guessing about 500 in materials and the rest in labor. What the labor rate in you neck-o-the woods? That should give you an idea.

I think I may be moving to Twin Falls...a paint job at 3 grand is "a lot"...??? Even a "decent" paint job, around here, will run upwards of 3 grand...a "show quality" paint job will run 5 to 10 grand...

And I've never been able to purchase sealer, primer and PAINT for less than $800-1000...and end up doing it myself...

That said, 3 grand for a pearl painted top and a simple "primer" job seems like a lot ...but consider... there's a lot of work to sanding, blocking, masking, spraying, rubbing...

Well 3 grand seems fair, but more towards the cheaper side for all the work of a full out paint job. No matter what material you use, Pro's Chioce primer from the local parts store or 10 layers of HOK Kandy, you are still doing the same prep work. That where the $$ add up, not as much in materials. Its up to you if its worth that much to oput your car in primer with a pearl top.

    To me, not so much.

Well I talked to the owner of the shop and I think there was a miscommunication about the paint scheme. Serves me right for not speaking with him directly. He qouted me today for 3500 for the whole lot. Pearl creme metalflake top with a suede paint on the body. This is what I wanted qouted in the first place. Why would I want just primer?
    Its not even paint!
Plus this shop is known for their paint work. Candys Autobody & Paint.

i work in an autobody shop where we mostly do late model paint but occasionally do a few oldies
whether you want shiny paint or suede the same amount of body work should be done
if he quoted you at $3500 it was probably to straighten all the body seams and lines (trunk, doors, hood, etc...) do any body work necessary primer and sand it 3 or 4 times, spray it, and then wet sand and buff it
were working on a 64 impala right now and the guy purchased all new aftermarket parts, we replaced everything but the top and floor pans and still had to spray $300 worth of primer, and well have around $1000 in paint and clear
so the quote of $3500 wouldnt be that bad if they were to do it right and if you dont have to continuously take it back to have this and that corrected its worth a lot

Thats still a lot to spend for a "Neo-Traditional Suede Job". When the whole "suede" fad runs out, you will be wishing you just had them spray single stage gloss paint, or bb/cc, so the car will look like a real traditional custom. Spend a coule hundred to partake in the current fad, I can see that, to spend $3500, well, thats you choice.

Suede isnt traditional, people just think it is.

But if thats what you want, spend the dough. Personally, I think for less than $3500, you can do a "suede" job youself and learn a lot about bodywork and paint. Bodywork for a gloss paint job is very time consuming (ha, I'm currently taking a break from block sanding my car right now), but with a little practice, you can do it yourself, and take the time to get it perfect, and then have a pro just shoot the paint.

Maybe hes getting a suede job on the bottom 3 sides of the frame and then the top is going to be creme. In that case 3500 is way to much to paint a frame.

    Cart before the horse much?

I got this sweet painted body... hanging on my wall.

No worries guys. I always have my priorities straight with this car. I wont be getting any cosmetics done on the car until everything else is in well working condition. I was just asking advice on the paint for future reference. Next two items on my list are the frame and the ******. Its slipping pretty badly.
