Hey I was looking for leads on older salvage yards in North Carolina. I will be out that way next week to pick up a part from a friend. I will be traveling I-40 East over to Mocksville then heading south on 64 toward Asheboro. Return trip will run Hwy 49 back into Charlotte from Asheboro then up HWY 321 over to I- 40 WEST back to Nashville. Looking for 53-56 F100 stuff and a 77-81 Chevy Van column. Thanks for any leads.
i think both of the yards that used to be in Denton have now closed to the public. i know one is gone and i believe the other is only doing some online order stuff. theres a few cars ****tered in different yards around here but most are really picked over. theres a general salvage yard here in hickory thats been in business since the 50s but they are really tight about letting people into the yards and are fairly high on most stuff thats there to boot. you'll be within a mile of my house rolling up 321 to 40...ken....
Pull-A-Part in Knoxville (2 miles northeast on Rutledge Pike - the Zoo exit off 40) has 6 Chevy vans in stock ranging from 1978-1980. Tilt columns are $30, non-tilts are $20. You can probably check their website (www.pull-a-part.com) for the Knoxville address. A quick Mapquest should get you in & out fairly easily. If you're halfway decent with a wrench I'd think you could drop off I-40, snag the part, & be back on the road in an hour. JH
Thanks Harrison. I will stop by there. I used to live in Powell off Emory Road. Richards Auto Salvage in Denton, NC has closed.
Richard's been trying to sell that place for years, and asking way to much, someone took a look a few years back and laughed when they told me "that place should be a super fund site" I guess there were some environmental issues... http://www.richardscl***iccars.com/
This guy, I beleive, has been pulling stuff out Richard's or possibly Binghams - I'm not certain, but he did have late 50's early 60's stuff when I was there in the spring. It's located only a few miles from Richards; on the other side of Denton. Terry's Southern Automotive (336) 859-5880 188 Garner Rd Denton, NC 27239
to the best of my knowledge Bingham's was cleared out and crushed, they had an auction for a bunch of stuff then the leftovers were supposed to be crushed.. sad...
Hey, I have family in both Murfeeboro and Asheboro. If you see a white 48 Chevy truck out there, its my uncles.
richards was open only on friday and sat. last year it has been sold but I don't know the new owners hours. I heard alot of the stuff has been crushed but there is alot of original stuff in the buildings there. I went for a tour the last time I was there and you wouldn't believe the bucket seat and console that came out of cars stacked in shelves matched with each other. check and see if the web site has a contact number
Thanks Red, I may stop by your shop on my way back. I have talked to you about AC for my 55 F100 on Streetrodding.com
Guys Feb 23 I will be 40. Going to see a friend in Robbins, NC will there and head down I-85 all the way to Montgomery, Alabama. Anybody know of any good salvage yards along I-85 from basically Charlotte to Montgomery? I am willing to go about 30 miles either way off I-85. I have no particular need just want to look. I do like Ford F100 and rancheros though
Siler City East of Ashboro has an old Jeep/Willys junkyard. Check out the Zoo, it's one of the best in the country.
I'll be honest, I am sure there are some deals and cars to be scored. But coming from New York and now living in Charlotte, I have never seen scavengers like I have seen down here. It seems that everything have been picked over and cleaned out. These cats are no joke. They hoard just for Hoard sake. Good luck and let me know if any Late mid to late 30's Banjos show up.
Hey JefferyJames, if you notice in our area that if there is any old cars left sitting around, there is usually a crazy person connected with it!
Thanks guys. Maybe I will do a google search for salvage yards along I-85 south from Charlotte to Montgomery.
Tell me about it. The type that have shotguns waiting for people to ask about them or the type that will "Get around to fixing that one up". I find that I have a much more pleasant time getting parts off you fine fellas on the HAMB. But that be that I only get what I seek instead of everything I can find. Money has it's way of restraining me from time to time. Funny right?
