Traditional shop tool.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hot Rod Packard.., Oct 28, 2007.

  1. Most every one on here is all about the traditional aspect of hot rod building. I just picked this giant traditional hot rod making tool on friday. Played hooky from work so i could go get it and bring it home.

Now that it is home i have to get it off the trailer but it weighs 9500 pounds so it will take a little work but once i have this jammed in the garage until the shop is done only.. i cant wait to run it i have so many things that i need to build that this will make short work of for sure. The size is over whelming but for the price it had to be done it was worth the h***el of such a large machine. Just imagine the tools and parts that can be made on this super toy! i cant wait. Hope all of you enjoy the pictures.

    man... that thing is HUGE.

  13. Dude, you got an incredible deal. I ***ume it's three phase power?

  14. yes it has a 10 hp GE motor that is 3 phase so in will be looking in to a phse converter in the next week or so so i can have all the needed items so i can use it as soon as i get it off the trailer!! funny thing is that the place i got it from was a pump repair shop they got rid of it cause no one there could run it? i found it on a local casified web site and couldnt believe it had been on there for 45 days and no takers? i called and was going to go look at it but couldnt bring myself to do it. so two weeks later i thought what the hell so i called again and they still had it. so i went over thursday after work and we uncovered it and i asked the guy all the standaed questions but he did not have a clue so i just checked out every thing i could and told him i would take it but i didnt have any cash to hold it. damn bebit cards! oh well i told him i would come to his house and give him the money and he said not to worry that it was mine. i asked if many people were interested in it and said they had sevral people look at it but the size scared them away? so i told him i loved fat chicks and would be back in the morning to get. he got agood chuckle out of that. the place i got it from had it over 30 years and have not used for about the last 3 years and the guy said he had been ther for some 20 years and said it had only been used a hand full of time cause no one wanted to use it cause it was so big. the size is a little intimidating but i love it! hell it 5 1/2 feet tall and im 6 foot 2 so it is kinda big when i stand next to it!

If there's anybody out there within a convenient drive of Indy, I have an OLD Lodge & Shipley that's looking for a good home. Probably about a 1905 model, raised center (swings about 24"), converted from line shaft operation with overhead motor, single phase. Started a restoration and ran out of time & energy. {Does NOT have quick change gear box-not a thread cutter}. Good for wheels, drums. simple turning operations (you could lighten a flywheel on it.). PM me if you have any interest-I can make a VERY good deal including free consultin g on how to get this baby back in action.

Nice score for sure... My dad owns a HUGE machine shop and we don't even have one that big. We do have a boring mill bigger then most buildings though. Looks like you're ready to make some custom width wheels with a chuck that big :)

Awesome score, and yeah...BIG. You may want to look at Grainger for a single phase motor. Phase convertors actually cost more and can reduce power in some cases. To convert my 10H compressor would have cost me around $1200 for full power, or I bought a new "farm duty" 10H 1PH motor for $650 out the door. The idle time of a lathe motor might mean less energy cost than the draw of a full time convertor. Some guys have another way of converting, but I'm not familiar with it.
