I'm glad you're safe and weren't hurt. Its cheap **** like this that I didn't buy a new vise and went to the dreaded eGay and found a decent used Wilton. The search took me three weeks and losing out to last second snipers 3 times before I got one. Its in great shape, clean, fresh paint and forged. Its 50 pounds of "I can hold anything" American steel. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I couldn't find a decent vise at the local used tool emporiums, so I had to go to eGay.

For tools don't waste your hard earned money on cheap ****. Be selective and remember, good tools are a sign of a craftsman. You want to be a craftsman, don't you? You can't build quality projects with cheap, ****py tools.

I have never seen it happen but my grandfather had one which was a prentiss bulldog made in the early 1900s it had broken the front jaw off above the worm. it had been welded back and broken almost off again it was lying in the s**** pile. been there since the 40s.

I find when I make comments like this even though I think its funny, she doesn't and I end up with no *** for a while.:D
I found out also even if its not cheap tools, if I'm abusing it beyond it's capability is when I break stuff.
    Somewhat of a learning curve I think.:D

  7. Mine broke too, but the frame broke right in half. China ****s!

Lucky me I was handed two different wilton vises on two separate occasions, once when a car dealership was moving and another when Carrier left town to go overseas. I also have been meaning to get the old vise out of my grandfather's garage, it's about 100yrs. old and not only bolts to the side of the bench but also bolts to the floor and weighs probably 200 pounds.

When I was in the machine tool business; we sold the Made in England, RECORD brand of vices.
Forged, tough and NEVER had one come back.

One is sitting behind me on the bench, - been there for 25 years - its been "beat", "bashed" and "abused." STILL going strong!!
(stood up to dragging a 600 pound welding table around the shop when trying to bend something!! )

As far as I know, they are still made in England.

    Dave,

I think that's what I've got bolted to my bench - a "Made in Sheffield" Record...it's only a 4" & bolted to a wooden bench, but I've abused it & never had any problems (knock wood)

i not about to turn this thing into a china bashing thing. afterall, in most cases when **** is purchased, we knew what we were buying. ...but the thing to remember when you knowingly buy ****, that it may not just break - it may hurt you when it DOES break.

my $.02 - i strongly recommend YOST vises. you can check out there products here:

Be sure and read the fine print...The mechanics vises have "* Imported noted"

  16. ****, the one I wanted is imported, too. Oh well.

  17. I have broken two cheap chinease vices and a chinease ANVIL.

Both the vices broke like the one pictured, and the anvils snout snapped off as I was beating the living **** out of a red hot 1" square piece of steel with a mini sledge - wrapping it around the snout as the beginning of a frame for a wrough iron fence. It was cast with a heat treated face, not forged.

How the hell can you screw up making an anvil?

yes, and i think they're cast too. ...but just sharing my own good luck despite this. done a lot of successful squeezin. :D

  19. I might as well use it... after nineteen years with the same woman, it's not like I'm worried about being cut off for a while.
Oh ****, I think she heard me typing this - gotta' go!

If any tool has the words "Hecho" "Mexico" or "China" on them or any package they come in, I will not buy it. And I only buy new tools from a couple of distributors now. My first expiriance with POS tools was a wrench that broke when I was putting a tire on my bicycle as a kid. Damn near put a hole through my palm. That piece of s**t was from India.

I stop at every yard sale I see, if it looks like any old American made tools are to be seen or possibly hidden under other telltale stuff.

I don't remember where I got it but mine is a cheap foreign job too. The first time I had a hammer glance off the side of it I made a dent in the body putty. No kidding, it is slathered up in goop to make it nice and smooth looking. As far as strength goes it's still hanging in there.

The current amount of broken vices at Crushproof-3.
one Craftsman. (died at the hands of a snap on Dead Blow...dead blow 1, vice 0- it was less than 6 months old.) broke 1 ear and 1 jaw in half.

one I ordered from Mighty Auto Parts (wholsalers for shop goods-u.s.a. company) died a horrible death at the hands of ...yet another snap on dead blow.-only thing is, this was a 40 ounce rubber mallet style dead blow.
dead blow 2-vices 0. This is particularly surprising as this was a big ******* of a vice. it looks like someone dropped a ceramic plate.

vice number 3 isn't as broken as the others- it's internals gave up the ghost-it still gets tight...but no longer opens up when you spinny de Handle counterclockwise (Yeah...I thought the bolt fell out, too...nope.) and...you guessed it, Dead Blow 3...Vices 0.

so, in retrospect...Either Snap on makes the King Daddy of all hammers....I am supernaturally strong (which I would like to beleive, but know better), OR...

You just cannot buy a brand new vice that is worth a ****.

I think you are correct. When I got mine it was the last non "made in CH ina" vice at the local Lowe's. It's a 6", Made in Sheffield, England, Record that cost around $100.00. Rotate the handle one full counterclockwise turn and the jaw slides back and forth, very cool!

It will be just fine, get some JB Weld. Then sell it on Ebay and buy a good one.
