ASCOT ,GARDENA ,CAL 1980. Eddie Wirth Sprint Car . After years of flying around the sticky 1/2 mile on Flattrack Motorcycles, Eddie switched to 4 wheels and proved once again he is a genuine "Wheelman".

Fur Biscuit, Yep your are right , San Diego. Yes I was running my Sprinter ( Sprint Kart!)at the time , on the internal 1/4 mile track. Ascot was a hot bed of racing almost everynight of the week. I raced Karts every Thursday night in the March thru October. I also raced "TT" on my motorcycle regularly with District 37 AMA. The CRA raced non wing sprint cars Saturday nights and Eddie Wirth was my favorite because he was so aggressive and his car was so beautiful always in such a dirty sport. Anyway this shot is me in qualifying. So many folks loved Ascot and I'm sure there are lots of HAMBers who have great memories and Photos. We should have an Ascot thread.

I can certainly recommend Gary Doyles books. Not cheap but they are superbly written and illustrated. I actually have limited leather bound editions of both (#10 of 10 of the DePalmer and #16 of 50 of the Murphy book). I have Gary's email address if you wanted to talk to him. He is a real nice guy. PM me if you do want it.

    Hi,
Sorry for late response...don't have any recent photos, this thing changes every time I go back to my parents' place. This photo was from back in May before the Buffalo wheels went out to be re-laced. I will try to get some recent photos soon. I think quite a bit on it is different now, if I remember correctly. It's been a couple months since I saw it. My dad said he was working on the steering situation this week.

  19. sorry, can't help you on that one. (I have a bunch on film, but none on digital) eventually I will scan some more.

The car was built outside Gilroy. It is a '17 American La France. The ch***is and drive train are from a ladder truck (the pump truck trans axles are 12" longer) The main tricks to making the car look right, were that lots of spring leaves were removed, and most importantly are that the wheels aren't stock, they are off of a Simplex.

  20. i like the front wish bones. you do need some posts though. what wheel base are you using, it looks like 100"

  27. Cris,

How tall is your rear kickup? I would like to have the centerline of the wheels at the same height as the centerline of the frame on my speedster.
