Hey one and all , I`m from Australia and have bought a customized 53 belair hard top coupe from California which has had the pillars removed to make it a pillarles hardtop as opposed to a sports coupe, I hope that makes sense ! Anyway i was wondering if anyone had any pics of one already done , also trying to work through just how i would set up the rear side gl*** ? The chev side rear windows don`t wind all the way down , but to my knowledge the buicks of the same year do wind all the way down ! I know that they are different body styles but would be interested to see what the winding mechanism looks like ! Does the window move straight down or does it move in more than one step [ eg back and then drop forward ]. If any one has a photo of the mech or a picture of the window winding down i would be very gratefull or someone who has an idea of accomplishing what i`m trying to do . Tanks Rob [ hope i didn`t confuse everybody ]
I have a 53 club coupe, the windows slide back into the c pillar. If it had b pillars, then it didn't start life as a hard top. Do you have the wrap around back gl*** or the smaller one? This isn't my car, but is the same model
some people just use a piece of chanel ,and make it so the window slides out. Not a handy solution, but would work as a last resort. I think the chev windows don't roll all the way down, because they hit against the rear inner wheel well. that is how it works in a 56 chev sedan . Maybe the buick has a longer wheel base, or a shorter roof to facilitate the straight up and down motion.
You need the rear regulators from a buick/olds or chevy hardtop or convert. They are different and the rear windows swing down like an Ax or a "pendulum". The rear window track in the back curves all the way down and runs back into the "B" billar underneith the door striker latch, while the front of the rear window almost stays in a fixed position and pivots 90 degrees while the rest of the window sinks.
The 53/54 H/T windows don't roll down, they rotate backwards through 90 degrees. They dont step back and then drop, just a simple pivot at the front. The rear window also has a rubber strip to seal against the front window to cut wind noise. If you've had a B pillar removed chances you will mostly cruise with the back windows down anyway so maybe roll down functionality might be a bit over rated. I cruise Melbourne in my 54 H/T with all windows down. Only rain has me wind em up. You could fit channel to the window surround and just slide panes of gl*** in if you need 'em. I'd put a spring loaded latch or something on them to stop em banging forward if you stand on the brakes. How about some pics of your car
