So I swapped in a 292 chevy out of a late 60's truck in my 49 chevy convertible, when I got the motor it had a 3 speed stick on it so it had the manual trans starter. I put a 700r4 behind it with a automatic flywheel and headed out to by a starter, after going to all the big name stores they all come up with the same starter, bad part is it doesn't fit, the fly wheel hits the nose cone of the starter. I'm not sure if there is a different starter that I don't know about, or if the flywheel I have is wrong. I thought there was only 2 different flywheels (the tooth count being the only difference) and maybe 3 different starters. Any input would be greatly appreciated
my formula has been if the starter has 2 long bolts you have the big dia fly wheel and if you have 1 short and 1 long starter bolt it goes with the small fly wheel. but it just when you think you know everything that you get bit.
there are only two different sizes of flywheels....which do you have? and what were you looking up a starter for, the engine or the trans? Some 60s chevy engines were not drilled for both starters.
IF you can't seem to find one for the big flywheel (sounds like thats what you have), or you'r not drilled for it, look at powermaster or tilton starters, they' have (well some) 2 sets of holes drilled for both flywheels.
The 2 bolt/LONG across from each other is small flywheel. The BIG & small Bolt is for Bigger flywheels. BUT not all L6 blocks are drilled for Both starters, You may have to drill the other hole. Leo's Book has a full size templet in it. for Drilling the second hole.
The starter on my 250 was straight across Small flywheel 153 tooth. went to a 168 and to the stagered starter 1 small 1 big bolt. (opps) YES I typed that wrong stagered starter ( both Bolts are long)
that's odd...all the small flywheel starters I've seen have the bolts in line, one long, one short. And all the big flywheel starters that bolt to the block that Ive seen use two long bolts, staggered.
I have to count the teeth on my flywheel tonight. My block is drilled for two long bolts straight across, but I think I have the large flywheel. That ****s because I'll have to swap flywheels. I can't afford those specialty starters, unless someone has a used one laying around cheap.
OK I just went and Pulled my starter Out of my car seeing That my motor isn't back in yet. BOTH bolts are long ones for a stagered starter nose cone. And I dug out my Other starter with the Bolts straight across and That is One Long one short. Shorter Bolts goes to the OUTside and LONG bolt to the INSIDE. Not to be a smart*** or anything But I can get pics if you want. and i have been working on these L6s since 1980 and There is one other starter Nose and it took 3 bolts which Held it to the bell housing. But that one has nothing to do with what we are talking about now. Yes i did type this wrong (The starter on my 250 was straight across Small flywheel 153 tooth. went to a 168 and to the stagered starter 1 small 1 big bolt.) STAGERED bolts are the same Long. Sorry i got confused and Miss typed it.
