***Lets see some home made/one off HEMI intakes***

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris Casny, Nov 2, 2007.

  1. I might be getting my hands on a 53 Desoto Firedome 276 Hemi, I know there arent many speedparts available for the 276, and I was thinking of making my own intake manifold for it and I'm looking for some inspiration and knowledge on the subject.
Here is a thread that kinda scratched the surface.

    What have you built.
    Thanks, Chris
Some exaples of what I'm talking about.

I have a hand fabbed Dual 4~barrel that was made in the mid 50s by an old circle track racer.

Sorry, But i am STILL a computer illiterate & cant post up pics.

  4. Chris,

All of those intakes look like U-fab style intakes, they make a couple of different Desoto intake's for not that much money. But if you are really wanting to make your own, you can buy intake flanges from them for $125.00.

The one on my Sports Coupe is a "REAL" Crower U~Fab.. Built in 1960 & run on a record setting "A" Roadster at Fremont Drag Strip from '60~'62.

The 2X4 Manifold is a Hand Fabbed Piece made in the Mid~50s for an old circle track racer from the Mid~West.

I saw a '56 at a carshow in AZ a couple of years ago. The guy had combined two 2 bbl manifolds to make one 2x4. It looked pretty good!

does it make a difference in tuning or performance if you use square tubing or round tubing for the plenum or log? Im going to make one for my 331 next year... i hope.

    also...

i used to be into VW's and on a site a few years back a guy was showing updates of a plenum style intake he was making for his boxer engine. on the inside of the plenum the tops of the runners had venturi extensions. i thought it looked interesting and have wondered if anybody else has tried this.

Hot Heads and Lake Headers make 4x2 and 6x2 log style manifolds for Desoto. I think you might be waiting for that cast Vintage Speed intake for a long time, but thats just a guess. I'm in the same boat as you guys, got '56 330 Fireflite. Any more options?

*** It's strange that there seems to be so many Desoto intake realted threads going on at the same time right now... Would anyone else be interested in combining all these threads, or pooling knowledge, or somehow consolidating all this information so we do not have to reinvent the wheel?
I mean, it seems a lot of us are trying to accomplish the same thing with limited resources - maybe if we combined our forces we could turn into the Voltron of Firedomes or something... Just airing it out there.
