'53 Chieftain Hydra-matic Wiring help

Does anyone know how to wire up the hydra-matic "saftey switch" in a 1953 chieftain? I have the wiring diagram and the FSM but they only mention the existance of the switch not how and where it is wired in. I am assuming tit is a neutral safety switch and backup switch hybrid sort of thing. any help would be great.

 

Should be on the firewall side of the steering column under the hood.

 

I know WHERE it is...i need to know HOW to wire it.

By where i ment wiring reference not physical location...that was my fault

Is the hydromatic for 53 the same for 55? I've got a shop manual on the 55.

I only bounce for Barnett and it goes far beyond just the net.

Hey Brandy, Sent you my contact info.....I did figure out that the two screw terminals are the neutral safety switch (one from the "SOL" post of the ignition switch then out the solenoid). I just cannot figure out the two bullet type connectors. i was hoping they would get continuity between the two of them when i shifted into reverse.....no such luck.

I got your info, I'll pull the book tonight now that I've got an empty house.

 

I checked my 55 service manual and for some reason it doesn't show the neutral safety switch wiring.I also checked my Hydra-Matic service manual and it isn't listed in there either.I checked the car but couldn't see a whole lot.Part of the wiring I think goes to a junction block on the left fender well(three terminals)and from there down to the starter solenoid.The color coding doesn't seem to be consistent so it may have been changed before I got the car.I'll see if I can trace them over the weekend.

 

thanks, This really has me stumped. Again, the screw terminals i have determined to be the neutral safety portion of the switch. but the bullet/banana plug terminals are still a big "?" for me. i am assuming they are the back up/reverse light switch although i cannot seem to figure out how

 

My books aren't showing a neutral switch either. I don't even have backups on my Poncho. It's delete.

I'll run thru it again and give it another look, but I was up all night Saturday going thru everything.

 

My 55 has the reverse delete also. The bullet connectors aren't even used. The 56 shop manual shows a reverse wire but no color of the wire. Are either of the bullets hot while in reverse? Or ground I guess since it's 6 v. The MPC showed the same switch from 53-56. pn 1998039.

 

well, nothing gets continuity, when shifted to reverse...nothing is hot as i am still rewiring it (no battery in her yet) basically, it hooks up as follows. one screw terminal gets the power (coming off of the ign switch) the other screw terminal goes out to the starter solenoid. when in Neutral these have continuity as to act as the safety switch. when shifted out of neutral these loose continuity. the posts of the other two connections never get continuity to anything reguardless of gear.

 

ok...SOLUTION FOUND! the banana connections are the revers light switch, my adjustment was a little off! thanks all for the help
