Some of you know my current job has been getting worse for the last five years. This summer it got really ugly. I've done IT suport and system/network administration at my current job for over 18 years. Things have gotten really corperate. They ended up sacking my boss and another programmer. This is while we were in the middle of a huge project of replacing all of our home grown software with an out of the box ERP package. The remaining programmer found another job shortly therafter. That left me. I was called into my new bosses office and asked what my intentions were. I was honest and said I was looking at my options. To sum up the response I was told I could either make a one year commitment to see the project through or they would start looking for my replacement. :-/ I really don't see it being done sucessfully in that time and told them I could not make that commitment. My job was listed in the paper the following Sunday. Guess my 18 years don't count for much. I've been offered and have accepted a job at the local hospital in their IT department doing much of the same support stuff as I have been doing. One of the big things I wanted was to work in a team environment and that is definitely what they have. I'm thrilled half to death!!! My last day is the 13th at the old job and am starting the new one on the 19th. If you guys want to pitch or lock down this thread, that's fine. Just had to share!!! Life is good again!!!
Could not have happened to a better guy, You deserve the best. It is amazing after 18 years how they can treat employees. It happens everywhere so they can benefit. But alteast you got something good lined up and you aint staring at Christmas without a job, etc. Good luck Kerry Rusty
Absolutely thrilled for ya, Kerry. 18 years means very little anymore. Neither does any other amount. Times have changed. I left the automotive industry in '86 (health) to get into IT. Ran a business that grew and was supposed to become a partner. Never happend. Left that in 97, started my own repair service. It went really well but I was asked to be an IT instructor in '98 and have been ever since. Steady wages, pension, benefits (we have a GREAT mechanics shop at the campus that I can use anytime!!!). We send students to our regional hospital for work placement and they are always happy with the placement. Good equipment, good teams, good experince. I hope you will be an ***et to the team and enjoy it. Just think... if you ever feel sick.. you will know a bunch of doctors and be really close!
You know Kerry, I hope they fall on their face. Thanks for your support but if you don't heed our threats..... well....... Good for you.
Hey that's GREAT!!! I am glad you got that hospital job. Good for you. (PS don't paint your coupe...)
Good deal, its very tough to deal with management that has the wrong ideas. I have a similar senario and around 80% of my department is wieghing their options as to wether to stat or not. Enjoy your new job.

Good for you man, The corp. world is such a back stabbing environment. I worked in I.T. for Harris Corp, and they shut the whole division down I was in, many guys close to retirement. Turned out to be the best thing for me, but I thought my world had ended at the time.
I'm happy for ya, KERRY - like folks said, you deserve it. There's nothing worse than dreading your job each morning. FWIW, I remind myself fairly regularly that the only reason I go to work is to pay for the things I do when I'm not at work... that keeps me focused on the important stuff.
CONGRATS!! Its not easy when these bean counters come in and make you feel like you dont matter. I had a Boss that threw a phone book down and Quickly opened it a put his finger on a name and said he could do your job. Well i threw my keys and cell phone on the desk and told him to make the call and walked out . it didnt pay the bills but i felt better.
Thanks for the good words guys. After 18 years change feels wierd. I'm pretty pumped about it. I do sort of hope they have a tough time replacing me. There is no love between most of the director level up and myself. We are sort of rural so I think they will find it tough. Right now they are looking fow the whole IT department, a manager, a programmer, and a support spe******t (really a sys/net admin). I do wish well for the company though. The rank and file folks are great and I'd hate for them to suffer but they will. I feel a bit bad leaving them in the lurch. They were one of the biggest reason I lasted so long. My wife has worked at the same place for 22 years in the accounting department. She's had it to for other reasons and has found another job as well. We both resigned on the same day. The Goertzen's have left the building. Ya know Tman, I might just take you up on the offer if I get any more **** from the COO.
That's great man - I'm in IT too, it can be pretty rough out there, but it sounds like you landed in a good place. - Joe
Congrats Kerry, hope this promotion means you can spend more time on the road...........hehehehe Good job. man. BigKen
