65 Ford 8" question...

I have a 65 8" out of a Mustang that I'm putting in my Falcon. My question is what is the ****** thing that is also the bolt down for the br*** brake splitter? It goes right into the axle tube. I can get a pic of it if needed.

It's a breather to vent the rear end.

 

Where is it supposed to vent to?

 

Into the atmosphere so that your third member's moving parts can relieve pressure so you don't blow axle seals, gaskets and such. Bet you don't know that automatic transmissions have vent tubes too...

Sometimes has a rubber hose with a cap end on it tucked up near the frame somewhere.The cap is loose on its companion piece to allow it to breathe.Loose hoses dangling down will draw moisture into the housing.
