  2. The grille treatment on Jerry's Merc has always been one of my favorites. I just love the look of that faired in Desoto grille.

Apparently the Wichita look has influenced me more than I realized.

On top of it all, I seriously dig the look of kustoms all hunkered down in the front. I always have.

  5. I never actually saw the Titus Merc in person, but It looks kool as hell in all the old photos I have seen. What has become of Jerrys most recent Oldsmobile (or is it a Buick)?

He sold it to the guy that had the orange & white 50ish Pontiac with the
see through hood. Some one told me they are going to do a 60's style
Kustom. It should have a lot of attitude when its done.

Hey Slide, it has infected a lot of us.....

Well, Mick...I can tell you it was a body-off rebuild...not that that is anything new...and I can tell you it does have a '78 Trans Am sub...and a '70 Caddy 500 incher, with blok hugger headers...and early Caddy valve covers...and a new aluminum radiator...and for the body, I ....oooooops...better not go there...

You're taking medication now...??? You're OK...??? Do you need to lie down...???

Cory, that Buick belongs to Greg Davis of Hiawatha, KS...it's riding on a Seville chassis...

I would like to add a Kustom that was first started in the Wichita area by Ernie Baker and I saw it in 1986 in Springfield Mo. It was in grey Primer and I knew I was going to own it. I told Ernie if he ever wanted to sell it keep me in mind. He sold it the next year to Doug Schoemaker who sold it to me(in 1990) and I finished it 2 years later. I still own it today. Its a 58 Plymouth with 57 Desoto Fins and 60 Olds tail light's sitting vertical with a 59 Chevy bumper 3 pc. all welded together. I added a louver grill under the front bumper sunked antenna's on the inside of the rear of the fin's and several extra's and had a bodyman finish it in Plum Krazy in 92.

  20. When I looked at the photos of the Gary Carr's Starbird-built '51 Merc it came to my mind that it later on was in the movie "the Junkman". Wasn't it also owned by Toby Halicki?
As we all know Toby got killed in an accident and his collection was parted out. I wonder what happened with that Merc. Is it at Starbirds or somewhere else?

  21. OK, might get blasted for this one, but we have acouple good examples right here locally. Can't forget some of Gary Mundy's past rides, lots of good ideas.

For me, it would have to be Ray Fahrner's "Eclipse". I liked it way better in its original paint.
    (Yeah, I know it's from Missouri.)

Let me thank you folks for this discussion. There's always been a pulse of sorts to kustoms from that part of the country. Hard to find it but this discussion pretty well zeros in on the idea. For the record it happens to be my favorite style, but I never really put the pieces together to ID it like this. Doing 2 Chevies this way. A mild 61 spt cpe and a less mild 54 AD pickup. The pickup is years away but I hope the 61 sees road dirt this coming season. Thanks again.

Exactly! Hard to go wrong with Stucky's "Lil Coffin" - it's a custom and a hot rod - a true classic in every sense of the word, and very much a Wichita car.
