  3. I did not check the links above, but the intake is wider on the 351W than the 302.

Using one hand, my thumb and pinky finger easily touch both front intake bolt heads on the 302.. The 351 is a stretch.. its about 2 or 3 inches wider.
    Make any sense??

The way I can tell at a glance is the lower thermostat housing bolt. Can you get at it with a socket and extension? Then it's a 351, the 302 you have to use a wrench, not even a good wobbly socket can get on the lower bolt on a 302.

A 351W has a taller deck height 9.5" inch vs. 8.2" inch for the 302. Also, it has larger diameter crank journals and a wider intake manifold. The distributor is taller and it features 1/2" inch head bolts instead of the 302's 7/16" inch head bolts

    289 and 302 intakes are 9" wide. 351w intakes are 11" wide.

The fastest, easiest way to tell if it's a 351W is to look at the block where the distributor plugs in. If it has a tall ridge to the intake it's a 351W.

To repeat a bit, the taller deck height means the intake mounting surface is higher than the distributor hold down. On a 302 they are about the same level.
This is what it looks like on an ***embled greasy junkyard engine.

Where the timing cover attaches to the block at the water jackets, on the 302 the deck is very close. On the 351 the deck is much higher. Once you have seen both there is no mistaking the difference.

    If it looks like a 289, then it's a 302. If it looks like a wide 302, then it's a 351w. If it looks like a miniature 460, then it's a 351 C or M

    damn I'm helpful!

Here's a 351C. The 351/400M series is basically the same. Differences would be better explained in a different thread. But to be sure it's a 351W make sure the timing cover area is not like this one. The timing cover bolts onto a Windsor. The timing cover is partially cast into a Cleveland/Modified.

    A quick reference for 351W or 351C/351M/400M?

351C/351M/400M water neck bolts to block.
