im doing a father daughter project lowering my falcon. my dad is dead set on not cutting the coils infront. i dont want to do the mustang front end. what other options do i have......anything? custom dropped spindles? anything? would also know abouts where i can find some hop up parts for my 170 thanks *this is not duke by the way*
There is a front suspension modification for great handling used by Shelby on the GT350. Check Mustang websites for the Shelby conversion for front suspensions. It's easy, it's beneficial, and it's Shelby.
have you tried tffn.net ? i have a '63 ranchero, i have cut coils on my ranchero and it actually drives better with 1 1/2 coils lopped off. as far as the rear, blocks aren't the problem, but getting u bolts made cause the axle tubes are super tiny alot of shops don't have the correct die to make you a new set. as far as i know nobody offers dropped spindles for the falcons. i simply got my rear leaf springs dearched about 3 inches and it drives much better than with blocks. i had 3 inch blocks on the rear and removing 14x 6" wheels ****ed!! i had to flatten the tire to remove it. if your car is a 6 cyl. you probably still have the 13" wheels though???
i got 14"s right now. i found them on craigslist. i tried to talk my dad into de arching the springs and hes not for it. and hes fronting the money. hahaha. and he and i have different tastes......so thanks a lot for the info. i'll keep searching.
hmm, ok so is the car a 6 cyl car? cause...you can do the granada disc brake swap, and La Grasta said in another falcon post that he knew some one who was going to be coming out with dropped spindles for that swap, something i'm very interested in. i did the granada swap on my original V8 car and it is/was the BEST upgrade i have ever done to any of the falcons/rancheros i have owned! as far as the rear goes, dearched springs are a much better and safer alternative to blocks i think, unless your thinking of bagging your falcon? 4 link maybe??? what are you thinking of doing??
i dont want to bag it. just lower it. haha i will tell my pops about the dearching. and yes its a 6 cyl. so going to disk brakes then there MIGHT be a spindle coming out. i know that i can get disk brakes in front and a place in canada said i can put mustang spindles on it.....sooooo
this isnt duke. i cant tell sarcasm over the internet, and my car is a 6 cyl. so im not sure about that. and its a 4 lug and i dont really want to go to disk brakes. but just seeking out options besides cutting the coils.
jamco i believe will make you a set of custom dropped coils if thats your concern. their may be a shop closer to you who might do them also??? Hey Kurt!! hows the comet coming along!???
okay thanks a million! i have no idea of any shops round here that will do them . but i will look into it.
hahah this is actually MEGAN! haha and yeah my friend was telling me about that. and i am interested in it. but i know nothing about heating the coils and what not.
i cut my coils. 1 1/2. put 2" blocks and took out the overload leaf for the rear. sits low and rides pretty good. i just got u bolts that have a 2 1/2 dia. and bent them to fit.
No problem getting new 2" lower coils in New Zealand so I'm sure you can get them in the USA. I run them in my Falcon. Depending on your budget check these guys out.... Excellent products - strut front end etc. http://www.rrs-online.com/ Noddy
What's your dad's plan/budget?? I chopped my springs....no probs, blocked the back....had to jack it VERY high to change 15 inch wheels used 74 Aussie falcon 5 lug spindles/discs (maybe same as Granada????) got lucky and found a police special diff 3.2 gears and bigger commercial drums and 5 lugs Castlemaine Rod Shop(Australia) sell FULLY reco Sprint diffs and disc rotors that fit on the drum brake spindles for exactly this purpose http://www.rodshop.com.au/index.html refer to xk-xp falcons As for hot up on a 170........just need spanners and an engine crane!!!....the trick is finding the right boat to chain it to as AN ANCHOR used a 71 250 with a 2 inch exhaust and a 3 speed auto
Pasadenahotrod was right on for a Cheap way to lower a falcon. Do a search on shelby/mustang sites. I believe it was called a "shelby drop". It moves the upper control arms about an inch which reduces the spring rate. There should be templates on those sights to make a pattern from. If thats not enough start whittling some off of the coils.
falcons and cut coils go hand and hand. Low buck car deserves a low buck lowereing job yes i did the same on my wagon 1 coil and a 2" block. Would i do it again.......................Yes! but lower keith
thanks a lot for all the responses. i will look into. i dont know what my dads deal is with cutting the coils. i have searched all over this forum and everyone has cut coils in thier falcons. UGH but i will look in to the lowered springs. thanks a lot.
Just dont cut to much. The person who cut mine had it to low, had to put some boosters in them just so it was not sitting on the bump stops. It looked good but the windshield is cracked and that is probaly why. My car has 3 inch blocks in the back. I need another set of springs and cut them down, I am a big guy and that does not help either with to much cutting. Good luck and show us the results!
I agree with the crowd. Cut the coils & use blocks on the rear (or de-arch them.) It's easy & cheap, & it works just fine. You can always replace the coils. I have a 65 Falcon & that's what I did. It's been A-OK for years.
Jamco Suspension will indeed build you lowering springs and leafs, just call us up with the information about your car and we can get you a price
I have to agree with everyone who is telling you to chop those springs. I took a coil and a half out of my front springs and the car actually handled better. It firmed up the front end so it would'nt slop around in turns like it did at stock height yet it wasn't a harsh ride at all. Sounds sketchy maybe, but those springs come out really easy. They sit on top of the A arm so you don't have to go crazy unbolting a ton of stuff. Same thing with the rear, blocks no problem. Good luck.
I put 3 inch blocks in rear and heated my coils on my 63 wagon. it had 170 sixer in it.. what sukd was when I went over some speed bumps it would hit my transmission linkage and kick it in neutral. The guy who had it before me put in floor shifter. Fun little car!
Aaaawwww, sounds like spring chopping lost out. Jamco is a much more civilized way to go for sure. Any way you do it, just glad you'll get your car lowered.
Jamco should make poppy happy. If he's paying for it i'd order the works :O) Lets us know how it works out. I'd like to get some new leaves for my wagon keith
I put granada discs up front and lowering blocks in the back on my 61 ranchero. The only thing is youll need to drill new holes for the aftermarket u bolts cause they are alot wider. but over all it was easy, except the time comes to take the rear wheels off. Oh well ill leave that up to AAA. Also try and get blocks that have a slight angle to them to relieve stress off the Drive shaft and diff joint.
thanks for all your help! and my dad was pretty excited i believe he called jamco today? maybe. but im really excited. hes been draggin his feet for quite the time now about this project.
Dude, that deal fell through on the falcon, too bad too that thing was SOLID!! but i always have my eyes open for a nice solid falcon drag project! And the comet is sitting? bummer, whats not legal about your "mobile bbq"??? and customfalcon63 glad you found your answer, better tell dad to start writing that check so you can start putting around town in the falcon!
