im pulling my crap h-code 351c/fmx out and plan on dropping in a 302/t5 in for the time being. would an 87 302 mate up with a 70-74 fmx? i know they had 302/fmx combos back in i believe the 60's, but would i have a problem with anything such as the flywheel?
I am not sure that the Cleveland has the same bolt pattern as a 302. I am pretty sure it is smaller. Also you would need the correct flexplate. I think it is 164 tooth but may be wrong.
Cleveland has the same bolt pattern - if it's a Cleveland & not a Modified. Your bigger challeng will be flexplate balance - the 351C is 28oz imbalance & the late 302 is 50oz imbalance, so you'll need a flexplate that works with the late 302 & the FMX. If you're intent on auto, I'd swap the FMX for a C4 - smaller, lighter, less power robbed, more parts, etc.
Your crossmember is probably cut out, most of the time they leave the sides. The left side has to be there for the pedals. A C4 on that 302 would put the trans mount right on the old crossmember and if both sides are there it's not to difficult to fab a new bolt in center. Ties everything up nicely and brings back the structural strenght that crossmember was providing. Those after market trans mounts can't do that. Just be aware of the C4's limits. They can be built for high H.P. Just takes money. But they do fit real good.
