Hey all I am aquireing a 331 red ram hemi from a 1951 dodge 1 1/2 ton truck and I was wondering if the bell housing pattern on a dodge hemi was the same as a 360 from the earily 70's as I have a mopar 4 spd and bellhousing That I would like to use.. It is going to be taking the place of an old flatty 6 and gyromatic in my 51 coronet. Any info would be great!!! Thanks damen hill
First things first....a 331 is not a Dodge hemi, it's a Chrysler, which is very different. Either it's not a 331, or it's not a Dodge. Dodge hemis debuted in '53. In any event, it won't accept a 360 bell housing.
Oh ok I was mis informed about the truck... It is a dodge with a hemi Te gent I am geting it from was the one who gave me the year and specs...
If it's from a Dodge truck, it may very well be a 331. If it is a '51 331 it will have the long bellhousing that is not the same as even a '53 Red Ram Dodge.
Since the 51 dodge didn't have a hemi, that means someone put it there. Find out which 331 it is (short bell or extended bell). The extended bells have a cast-in bellhousing and are the early chrysler. The short bell 331 is 53 and 54 I believe. While the bellhousing bolt pattern might be the same, the crank stick out might not be. I know hot heads sells adapters for chrysler to late mopar, so I ***ume they are different. After you ID the block, post a note on Hot heads forum.
Dodge used Chr Hemis in thier big trucks, & Dodge Hemi(or polys) in the smaller trucks. To use a modern 904/727,or GM you need an adaptor. The 51-3 Chr has the long tail. ****** adaptors on them limit ****** choice, adaptors available for short tail Chr & the Dodges with quite a few choices.
Not trying to ruin your day, but in the last 10 years of the 1950s engines bought/sold sight unseen I've heard about, all were "Chrysler hemis", and 1/2 were "392 hemis". Why? Because the source doesn't know what he's looking at, and it's a big V8 in an old car. Most were polys, some actual Chryslers, a few DeSotos and Dodges, and even some 350, 361 etc. B. How was it described to you?
