Looks just like mine when I got it. I picked up a lot of parts from Andy Bernbaums.

Stay away from BURNEDBOMB!!! Just my humble opinion. Lots of stuff out there, however remember, as a Canadian made car it has the 25 inch long engine, same as Chryslers and Desotos. To make sure measure the head, Can modles had 25 inch long. So if when you need engine parts, specify for the long block engine. As noted before Canadian Dodges were based on Plymouths with changed sheet metal and different badging / trim. Nice looking car. My father had a 49 Dodge with the bustle ****, first car I remember. Is it fluid drive??? If so remember to put the e brake on or chock the wheels, it will roll away as there is no mechanical connection between engine and trans so no engine braking with engine off.

Put Allpar on your reference list good info there on Canadian made and export models, and flathead engines in general. Good luck.

Nice Ride I got a 51 coronet I am building right now... My ol' flatty 6 runs like a friggin top! But I have a hemi for mine, These old dodges are very solid cars. Yours a gyromatic.. Mine has one and I will say its a trip to first drive one since how it will autoshift up through the gears and you can stop and go with out clutching it!!!!

I agree with most here: 12volt conversion and drive it awhile to figure out how you want it. I'd just add to do the shock mounts:
    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215548
as it makes it drive SO much better.

I likes me some wayfarer too. The convertibles are super cool!

my only suggestion would be to lose the visor
freshen everything back up where its safe to drive
white walls and some striping would be sweet too
    body looks really straight
good project to start out with since the body is pretty nice

    Great find!

As Plym46 mentioned, the Canadian Dodge cars were re-badged Plymouth cars, with the long block motors. These "Plodge" cars were sent over seas too, to many countries around the globe.

Another great source of info is www.oldplymouths.com

I've had a ball with my '50 Plymouth, and I drive it everywhere. The flathead six is a great engine, even if the nay-sayers don't think so... My dad and brother are dyed-in-the-wool SBC guys, and they still can't believe I kept the six in my Plymouth. Nothing but a boat anchor to them, but the crowd is always under the hood of my car parked next to theirs at the shows... :D

Have fun, and if there's anything I can help with, drop me a line. Check out my car at www.50plymouth.com

  13. I agree with the post above, hop-up that flathead!! I have gone the same route as you and stayed away from the V8 swap.

Ill be rebuilding my engine next month for my car. Ill send you pictures of it when its done.

As so speed parts to look for, these companies made speed parts for the flathead 6. Edmunds, Sharp, Fenton, Offenhauser and Mallory are just a few names.

    Good luck with it!!

Dear God, no flames, skulls, demons or that other ****. (I haven't seen anything original coming out of custome painters in terms of paterns in over ten years.)
Its a neat looking ride, tighten everything up, good brakes and shocks, get rid of any rust and enjoy it.
I'd dynamat the living pooh-pooh out of it and make it as quiet as a limo inside. (better sound quality from the 'tunes!)

  15. I really like that car. If the six is seized or busted, drop in a small mopar V8. They fit those cars like they were made for them.

I would drop in a 318/904 combo with an 8.25" rear and disk brakes on the front. Be cheap, super reliable, good on gas, and easy to get parts for. A diplomat would be a perfect parts doner.

Neat car, first or otherwise. I'm with the other guys on this...get it going, get it safe and get down the road in it. If it takes more than a year to wear out a set of tires, you're not driving it enough.

Nice find! That's not something you see every day, and with a little work will make one cool custom.

    1. If you don't have the big Chrysler six in it then GET ONE! Since you plan a rebuild anyway, start with the largest displacement version they made. Motors will be cheap, and you might even find one that doesn't need rebuilding. Remember; there's no subs***ute for cubic inches.

    2. Find and swap in a later rear axle with a better highway gear; or swap in a factory overdrive setup, (unless you already have overdrive?)

    3. If it has fluid drive, find and swap in a manual trans setup.

Congratulations! My first car was the exact same body style, only a Plymouth (yes, I'm a Canuck!). Mowed lawns for my Grandmother and her neighbour in the summer of 1964 to earn the $50.00 that bought it in July of that year. It was a sort of metallic dark red and I painted the wheels copper and slapped a set of baby moons on it as well as painting the raised letters on the tires with white paint. Great little car that never left me stranded! You're smart just to do it up with the six. Good luck and enjoy the hell out of it! Regards, Dave.

Wayfarer, it's damn good to see pics of yours and Denny's rides. Thanks.

  24. If that's originally a Canadian Dodge, it will be based on what is a Plymouth in the US. It also will likely have the 25 inch long block, similar to a US Chrysler or DeSoto. A US Plymouth or Dodge would only have the 23 inch block.

If you plan to leave it mechanically stock, you can get a lot of good information over on the P15-D24 Forum. Their main interest is the flathead
sixes of either length in the 40s and 50s era. A bunch of nice guys with a
wealth of information. That's where I hang out a lot as my 47 Plymouth is pretty much stock. Here's a link to that one: http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/index.php Just sign up, introduce yourself, and jump right in - like you would here. Posting pictures is always a plus. Bob

You have plenty to work and plenty of support from the P15/D24 side..as it has the flathead 6 you be welcome and in good company..detailing my flathead now..staying all stock with this baby also..as Pete has pointed out in times past and others might I add...pumping this block up is relatively easy and straight forward with growing number of suppliers for accessories...

If you keep the 6 which in my opinion is the way to go, and convert to 12V you might want to check out Landon's Stovebolts http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/ . They have a mini HEI distributor that should help a lot. Also have intake, headers etc for the short block. Don't know about parts for the long block though.

Great find and post progress pictures as you go.

Start with the thing I didn't do to my first car:

    Brake lines.
