So I'm in the market for some new tires to replace the bias plies I had on the truck and I was wondering what the history, era, style... pie crusts originated from. Thanks to anyone that may impart some knowledge on me.
??? Typical excerpt: Also try: How to Make Flawless Pie Crust (It's Easier Than You Think). Sorry, not to sound like a dumb***, but I was hoping someone here had the answer.
The first ones I remember were from Bruce's Tires in Oakland California in '57. As far as I know, Bruce was the first to use the "pie crust" caps on drag slicks. All drag slicks were recaps then. Until the recaps came along, guys used bald tires or shaved tires. There is an article in the February '58 issue of Hot Rod where Bruce (Alexander) gives answers to racing tire problems. The October '57 Hot Rod has pictures of several cars wearing the slicks, Pete Ogden's Palimides Automotive roadster, the Speed-Sport roadster, and the Cook and Bedwell dragster. The style lasted until the mid to late '60s when wrinkle wall slicks were developed. In 1960, M&H began making drag tires from scratch. The style lasted until the mid-late '60's. Mutt
Hurst Racing Tires was started in 1961 out of San Diego, Ron started retreading in the late 50's and some of his first molds were home made. The mold for our earliest pie crust was made in 1958.I had the pleasure of talking with Marvin Rifchin "The M in M&H Racemaster" at the CHHR 07' for quite a long time. He said that M&H discontinued building the Pie Crust style tire becuase of cost. Tire required too much rubber to manufacture. I think era wise you did not see to many cars with Pie Crust tires after the late 60's running in compe***ion.
