I've read all the posts on 28-34 spindles and drum brake matings and the ones on 37-48 spindles. But they all seem to omit the 36 spindles, what does it take to mate them with 53-56 F100 brakes and hubs.do I need the spacer kit from speedway? or what bearings and races need to be switched out and to what?
I just put 56 F-100 brakes on 28' Ford spindles and they definitley DON'T bolt right up even with the speedway adapter ring kit. The ring it self fit fine but we had to use a lathe to build the spacer for the hubs, the one that comes with the speedway kit doesnt allow the hub to seat right. Next we had to make a retainer to keep the adapter ring (the big one) seated as the bolt circle and dust shield does not hold it in place. Next we welded up the backing plate mounting holes and then re-drilled for the 28' spindles. You are going to have to do the exact same thing with your 36' spindles. The bearing kit from speedway worked great with no grinding or modifing. All the work we did is why MOST people don't run F100 brakes on Pre-37' spindles. Good Luck.
do you have any pics of the process? are 36 spindles different than the 28-34 spindles. I was told it would be a mild adaptation. anybody else have any ideas?
I don't have pics of the process but can get some of the finished product to show you everyting you will need to make. If you can find a set of 37'-48' spindles it's alot easier?! I will get pics later this week, if you don't go another route.
Maybe its the stubbornness in me that I want to make this work, and I don't have an extra 200+ bones to shell out(spindles,steering arms,ect.)I really like the look of the stock 36 steering arms on the spindles.
The backing plate flange bolt pattern and stub axle are the same on spindles from 1928-1936(broken down, 28-31, 32-34,35,36). So if the late brakesa adapted with work to the A spindles, with the same work they'll do on the 36 spindles. Working with 37-41(7 or 42-48(21A-) spindles is just easier and they are everywhere.
Kutthroat is correct. You definitely need to machine a new spacer, otherwise the grease seal will bottom out on the spindle.
I've been able to remount the backing plates I just made my own spacer and welded the holes up , I also made a reinforcing plate and welded it to the inside of the plate under the dust shield. I just need to adapt the inner bearing with an inner sleeve, getting it machined tomorrow. thanks for the posts.
