Got your attention , didn't I? The engine from my Edsel is partially apart. It's been sitting for 30 years and was poorly maintained before that. There is a lot of sludge in the oil pan. I'm not pulling the engine or the pan (like I know I should!) but want to clean it a bit in there. What would you use to pour into the pan, which hopefully will eat up everything drain out and leave the pan and oil pump pick up clean? Since it's still on the car, I can't get in there to s****e or brush it. Gasoline? Mineral Spirits? Something harsher like Xylene or Acetone?
yup, if you're not going to pull the pan, then leave the sludge alone, so it can't cause more problems.
There's a number of ways to accomplish the breakup of sludge. Unfortunately, what generally happens is that the pump pickup gets clogged with chunks of ****...or oil p***ages do...and then you have much worse problems. I know it's like an itch ya can't scratch, but, leave it be. Otherwise (I'm guessing the heads are pulled, by your "partially apart"?), hoist it up just enough to pull the pan & do it right. Probably wouldn't hurt to replace the timing set while you've gone that far, too. Aw, hell, just rebuild it. I'm really good at spending other people's time & money.
Very good advice. The sludge that you loosen will haunt you when it clogs your pick-up screen and you huff your engine. Pulling the motor should not be that big of a job in that Edsel. Take the time to make it last, you will be happy you did.
I know some "harsh strippers" they all work at Jumbo's Clown Room in Hollywood. Sorry I had to say it.
When I first read the ***le I thought breeder will volunteer for this job. Otherwise I agree with everyone else leave the sludge alone or pull it now and save yourself aggravation later.
Seen more than a couple at the "Vu" in Bakersfield... I couldn't avoid makin' a comment either. -Troy
