Glass Bead Blasting Media

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by C9, Nov 13, 2007.

  1. Can you buy this stuff locally?

In most towns in other words or is it something you need to order.

How does it work with an HF sand blaster?

I can get it locally....Kleen Blast.
But the stuff is nasty......it breaks down easily and gets dusty, which is basically very fine glass shards, so were a respirator.
I prefer copper slag.....lasts longer, is cheap and not as dusty....

Jay, glass bead media should be available in most larger cities.
Like SinisterCustom says, ... Kleen Blast is one brand.

But as he says, "... the stuff is nasty......it breaks down easily and gets dusty, which is basically very fine glass shards, so wear a respirator."

If you plan to use it in a "vented" - sand blast cabinet, ("dust" vacuumed out with a filter) it will work.
Out in the open - VERY messy; and can get expensive.
Proper glass bead cabinets re-cycle the beads.

The glass bead breakage is probably related to too high air pressure. We do beading every day and it lasts a long time. You do get allot of dust but is more likely to be broken down material being removed than the glass beads.

As for obtaining the glass beads; look in the yellow pages under "metal finishing" You can order it but the shipping will be more than the beads.

Good advice from everyone so far... Another thing to keep in mind is that your air supply needs to be super dry and you will need a considerable amount of CFM, not just psi. Good Luck!

My local Tractor Supply co. has blasting media. Also most welding supply places have blast media. Tip tools has a good selection of media but shipping my be high.

  9. What I'm trying to do is clean up a pair of old slot mags.

Sanding, 3m pads & buffing are doing it, but the backsides and slots just need to be clean.

Sandblasting looks like it may work ok.
The 5 1/2" wide front wheels on the 32 were dull and the slot's polished.
When I got em back from the chrome shop where they polished them the wheels were nicely polished and the slots dull.

An ok look, but polished slots and wheel would have been nice.
