Scary! When I bought my Merc it had a scorch mark on the hood and a burnt-out air cleaner housing (factory standard) which had got going after a backfire. So its not only the foam types that will burn.... And now there is always an extinguisher in the back seat or trunk....
"like said before you can move extra fast when this happens" believe me, standing next to a gas pump i was moving double-time. scortched my finger tips and you can see all the plastic residue on my front clip.
I was reading this thread and was thinking...I got one of those , so I go out to the garage take the air cleaner off and bigger than **** theres a hole in the foam about the size of an apple. So a special thanks to all you guys and this thread. Mr. ****
Sounds like these things are a cl***-action lawsuit waiting to happen. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure I'd use them in the first place - but only because I've had some experience with that foam **** and have seen what happens when it gets old. They used it to pack high end model trains back in the 50s-60s-70s and it just falls apart with age if it's been handled much.
one of those came on my early bronco when i bought it, foam broke down every time you touched it and the carb popped one time and thats all took to melt that **** down the inside of the carb took that thing off and hucked it as for as i could!
IMO that and the one made by Weiand are two of the ugliest filters on the market. As far as a cl*** action suit goes, the fault seems to be with the engine and not the filter.
"the fault seems to be with the engine and not the filter." thats insane. a misfire from a fouled plug is occurance enough to not use such a highly combustable material on or around a engine.
Had one of those on my 55' Chevy and guess what? It also caught fire! Maybe we should all get together and get some free stuff out of Edelbrock!
Those air cleaners and the little plastic and gl*** fuel filters are an accident waiting to happen. If you've got one on your car throw it in the **** can, don't ever buy one. 34 years as a Firefighter you see a lot of car fires.
had one catch fire too,i had the hood open so I got it put out quickly, but it sure was close to being a real fire.i will never use one again.
Wow... I'm about a month away from getting my car back on the road and have one of those filters sitting on top of it right now. It's going in the rubbish pile as soon as I get home. Thanks for the heads-up, everybody. Usually the HAMB saves me time and headaches... today it may have saved my car, my garage, or more.
Another HAMBer saved.....I had one sitting on top of my 327 for hood clearance. I'm returning that ****** to Checker immediately. Thanks guys.
I purchased one of these last week and only drove the car 2x as its not a daily driver, but anyways, its going into the **** pile right now if it has happened to as many people as I have just read, its a flaw and could cost someone there life. Ok just went to pull it off and there was already a melted portion about the size of a golf ball and thats after driving it 2x a total of about 15miles insane
Three things I see sold in every parts store , foam air cleaners, three piece gl*** body fuel filters and the cheap twist top fuel pressure regulators. Any one of these will burn down your car.
I hate those damn things I had one on a 73 pantera L it did the same thing .My car back fired and it turned it into a smoke bomb .I bought one from Holley it had a reusable filter made of something else not foam .My 2 cents
If you could put a video camera on the carb you would see a volutal mixture of explosive **** mixing right above the carb, like gasoline vapor, mist, and fumes. Then mix a little oil with it like they tell you to put on the element for good filtering. Now get this **** all soaked up in that foam and it's like Tony Soprano says KA-BAAM the makings for a great fire, one little spark and the blaze is on >>>>.
