    i know i know....i said alternator!

this car i have had an alternator when i got it....its wired to a 4 post regulator and i just never got around to putting a generator on it and rewiring for a new regulator and all

well the alt. seems to not be charging now and im not really sure how to go about checking it to see if thats the problem or the regulator or just a bad wire somewhere
aside from checking each wire first?

i took it off the car, clamped it in a vice and ran it from an electric motor
with a voltmeter on "bat" and grounded i was showing .77volts

but for some reason im thinking this isnt how i should go about checking it?

    the alternator is a delco-remy
it looks like the number on it is 110079437A
and underneat it says 9L2U 12V_G (missing some numbers here)
its hard to read the numbers on it

    i have a "BAT"& "GRND" post and plugs for "R" & "F"

    anyone have any insight?
i really dont know much about these new fangled charging devices!

maybe its time to just bite the bullet and go back to the tried and true generator

    thanks alot!!

You wont be able to get a reading like that you need to "excite"the regulator. You need to touch a connector from the Bat termonal to one of the other terminals, cant remember which one.I say buy a one wire conv. kit rebuild the one you have, and polish the case before you put it back together

    thanks greg!

actualy i found a book on rebuilding them....took it all apart checked all the resistance where it said and then discovered a braided wire had broken off
waiting on some more parts before i can fire the car up again but i think that was probably the problem

    thanks alot anyways

Also, you have the earlier GM alternator which can't use the common one wire kit...but that kit makes the alt act more like a generator...
Couple of bracket ideas for adapting 3-wire gen to banger: Bracket from circa 1949 6 cyl Ford, or common GM bracket uses on 1960's---1980's 250 family sixes and sold in Taiwan chrome form as the standard speedshop alt bracket for Chevy headers, attach this part to any 1955-60's Ford V8 alt bracket

thanks bruce, I'll look into that
i was just going to run the stock 4 cylinder genrator with a cutout ontop with a diode to replace the internals

will 6volt have a hard time turning over high compression?
if the 12 volt gets down just a little it wont turn it over
