i built a real quick stand that held my motor a few inches off the ground and started it. That was with the trans hooked to it also. I have also started engines just sitting on the ground as well. It works but dont hit the throttle, it will take your feet right out from under ya!
why not leave it on the stand AND chain it on the cherry picker too... My Caddy 500 tries to turn itself upside down while in the truck... i cant imagine what it would do by itself.... If it was a 350 I'd say go for it but I like a little excitement.
Watching an out of control 350 spin and hop around on my high school shop cl*** floor was quite the sight indeed. I told that kid a dozen or so times not to do it. Id say if you dont want to put it back into the car to start it then build a heavy duty 4 wheel stand with the engine sitting fairly low. Then you can use the stand for other engines as well.
