im moving to Pasadena/Burbank come June to go to Art Center...
i don't know anyone in the area; but noticing the car art on the forum, i figured I would see if there were any students or alumni from Art Center on here. Try to make some friends before the move :D

I didn't go to Art Center but I grew up in Pasadena. All pasadena needs is a beach and it would be perfect. Maybe in the next quake anything west of Pasa. will drop off into the pacific:D Then I might move back. If you need info about the area (where and where not to live, best burger etc.) PM me. -stick

Good luck at art center, difficult and pricey. Dedicate yourself for about 4 years, then you'll be good. Take the criticism from the teachers and go with it. If all else fails go to Long Beach. Otis also started a Product design major. I'm Toy Design 2001 alumni at Otis.

As far as living near Pasadena. Don't know your car stuation but Monrovia, Duarte, Norther area of Alahambra, even Azuza are ok to drive from.
I went to Art Center Saturday High and some night cl***es.
I drove from Pomona, but I also commuted to Otis behind LAX from Pomona. Apparently there was less traffic back then. good luck!

that's the program im going for :) dunno if he's a HAMBer or not. he's a master though!

  8. I took night cl***es there in 1990 - Intro to Trans Design and Marker Sketching to build my portfolio - then I ran out of money...

Being a "foreigner" made it tougher. No student visa (part-time so didn't qualify) and no work visa. Plus sold my non-Hamb hotrods (GTO's) to afford to go. I'd sell 'em again for the opportunity.

And I'll tell you what - I LOVED IT. I would go back there in a heartbeat if I could.

On a side note, I was in Socal on holidays this past spring, took the family to Disneyland. But I left a Sunday open for myself and just drove around to all the places I hung out at when I lived there - drove up to Art Center (sniff, sniff) all through Pasadena and Burbank (as I lived there part of the time) then out to Pomona for the swap meet - it was my favorite day of the entire trip (don't tell my wife or daughter :D)

I only wish. It was my original plan to go to the Art Center but cir***stances changed all of that. I wound up at The Art Ins***ute of Pittsburgh. I loved it there and I think that it served me well. My son recently graduated from AIP with his degree in Industrial Design. Although The Art Center is probably the best place to go for transportation design... it's not the only route to a good education.
I do recommend The Art Ins***utes but I still wonder what The Art Center would have been for me.

I studied trans design at the old ACS location on 3rd st from '59 to '62 (didn't graduate, though). Learned a lot, but never got as good as I wanted to. I have never worked harder in my life!

    Good luck!

Yeah, Foose did graduate from Pasadena Art Center. You could stop by his shop and say hello - - in Huntington Beach, CA. He is a really cool guy and is always a genuine person. A friend came down from Canada wearing his H.AM.B. t-shirt when he went to visit him. Foose commented on his H.A.M.B. shirt. He really liked the shirt and said he is also a fellow H.A.M.B.'ER.

I helped Foose out with a Small sticker project for the Overhaulin' show last spring. It was for the '67 Dodge Coronet (Rumble Bee). He is not a digital artist. Another friend also was on the show (upholsterer) for the convertible T-Bird. He also has the original sketch. I was glad to help him out! Foose is really cool!

I graduated photo in '95. Chip's Chrysler-sponsored senior project was in the student gallery when I went to apply in Jan. '91 (he had just graduated). If I remember it right, it was a 1/5-scale model of the Hemisfear, in purple. Which Chryco *******ized into the Prowler. Pretty cool that he was able to finally build it 1:1.

One of my best friends went through the ACCD Trans dept and would start pulling all-nighters in the second week of the term..

My 4 years there were the toughest, funnest (?) and most rewarding of my life. My advice: Buy a Thomas Guide, don't take critiques personally (they can be brutal), get to school early to find parking, find a local pub that has cheap suds and free grub at happy hour and eat all your meals there. I suggest you start with The Colorado.

    or

Eat at Pie n Burger in Pasadena on California st at Lake st and at The Hat on Lake st, North of 210 = Great pastrami.. Oh, and Yaki's in Montrose on Honolulu. And go to Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake/Burbank on Friday nights to be with other car people.

Check with the office about a housing list. There are some local folks who rent houses, guest houses and apartments and only advertise them to ACCD students.

    Good luck!

Congratulations on the admissions to ACCD. Be prepared for many sleepless nights and an exciting adventure.
I graduated from Art Center in the transportation design program. I lived in South Pasadena, great community and close commute to school. I was fortunate enough to get a GM scholarship that helped offset the tuition, (and I thought it was expensive then!) Stewart Reed is the new Department Chair, a really great guy, he is exactly what ACCD needed.
I work with four other Art Center grads and another attended but did not graduate from there. The others are from CCS, and Ohio all here in the Dallas area by the way.
Good luck on the beginning of a great career, it is compe***ive, but you will never regret it if you love cars and art. Send me a PM if you would like to chat some time. I just recently hired a Art Center grad that just moved out from California a month ago, he can probably give you some good insight on places to live, etc.

i went to Art Center, photo dept. lot of work but not as much work as the trans dept. the first day they told us "dump your girlfriend, quit your job, and forget about your life for the next few years." yeah, thats pretty accurate. work your **** off and you'll be glad you did when you graduate.

I went too; Trans. Summer '99. It too was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, but don't let that scare you off. It means it was worthwhile and it stretched your abilities beyond what you imagined your limits to be. Also, being around so many like-minded people who are often more talented than you is both a terrific challenge and inspiration.

"westcoaster" makes a very good point in his post "forget about your life for the next few years". Yep, just dedicate yourself to learning all you can; it goes by surprisingly quick (in retrospect).

Also, just my 2 cents, do NOT be hooked to the past for your designs on your Art Center homework like we are here on the H.A.M.B. with our "Traditional" hot rods. You're going to Art Center to CREATE THE FUTURE.

Wife took some courses there and got her new-when-she-started car door dinged to hell in the parking lot.
You'd think people going to a school that specializes in car design a**** other things would have more respect for what and how they slam their damn doors into in the lot..!
Don't park your "good car" there and expect it to stay that way.

Like other's have said, work hard, don't even try to have "a life" and good luck!

Sometimes you can find estates "gate houses" for rent in the hills around the area and around the Rose Bowl area.
