Those of you who know Whitey will know how well done this piece is. Don't know how long it will be up on the newspaper's web page, though. http://www.kansas.com/126/story/224417.html
I met Whitey at Wentzville a few, well many years ago. I was new to racing a FED and it was a pleasure to spend a little time looking over his car and talking to him. Nice guy, no BS , just real racer at heart AND he's still at it!! Good story...
It's nice to see him get such recognition. While some folks make a lot of noise about what they want to do, Whitey just keeps on doing it - quietly. Doesn't look like he's changed a bit since I met him 6 years ago...... Thanks Jim!
Whitey is about as nice a guy as you'd ever wanna meet. I've never heard of anyone who didn't like him, with the possible exception of Flathead Jack.I don't think he don't think he ever learned to like gettin' spanked by Whiteys rail.
I have heard alot about Mr. MacDonald but I have never had the chance to meet him. How can we get him to come to the HAMB Drags?
Jim, I've been reading about him for years. It's nice to put a face and a car with the legend. It's refreshing to read a newspaper article where the reporter gets the facts correct. The reporter sounded like he knew flatheads. Thanks
He's been at the HAMB drags the last several years. Feels kind of wierd to have him come up tp me in the staging lanes to talk. I've pestered him about bringing his rail out. Up to him though. I think the first time I saw him run his injected flatty rail was 81 at WIR. Like everyobody's said, Whitey's a stand up guy. What he knows about flatties on fuel could fill a book. Very quiet and humble though.
Jay, I am sure he will be selling at the Wichita swap - hes been there every year as long as I can remember. I will take you buy his booth, although I am sure he has no idea who I am. I bought an old small journal 327 setup when I was a wee lad long before I knew his story. The story fits well from what I know of him. Still haven't ever done anything with the motor........
Yeah, he's usually in the middle of the south building. I keep thinking of the narrowed Ford rearend he sold there a few years ago. He told it it wouldn't take the hp. Still wish I had bought it. I also wish I'd bought the American Standard mags from him at Hutch a couple of years ago.
I have seen Whitey race here in Doodah, at Great Bend, Denver, and MoKan - he's always got the front wheels up! Wrote an article on him for a local mag a few years back, he couldn't figure out why a magazine was interested in him and his rail. He's just so humble. He's also done some driving on the salt for a friend a few times. As far as I'm concerned, he's a super driver, and a great low-buck racer. Definitely one of my local heros.
Jim, thanks for sharing the story! I'm gathering material for our Racing exhibit for the Historical Society, this is just the kind of stories that I need.
