We got some bad news about my 17-year-old son who has been fighting a degenerating neuromuscular condition since 2000. Things are going downhill and he now has to get a feeding tube because the risk of aspiration or fatal choking is now too great.

Jay is also learning-disabled becuase of a birth trauma.

This kid is my hero, has never lost the will to fight his disorder but this new development may be the last straw for him. If he weren't disabled he'd be the kid playing rugby, hockey, and Lacrosse. He's that tough.

He looks different from "normal" folks and is shy due to that around strangers. I'd like to introduce him to some of the Hambers in the area, but don't want to ***ume too much. After all, you don't know us and we are still pretty new to the scene.

Do any members in the St Peters/St Louis area have any suggestions?

Replies to the board or PM's are welcome.

  12. Christ makes no mistakes. He uses all situtaions for good, even bad ones. That may seem hard to understand for us, I know. God's perspective is a bit broader than ours. It's sort of like explaining the internet to an ant.
Your son was built perfect in the Lord's eyes. He has a purpose in God's perfect plan and the Lord promises to reveal that to us, if not now, then in the next life.
I'm reading a book called The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. It's an easy read meant to be read in 40 days just a little each day. It speaks about this very thing. If you haven't heard of this book, you should check it out. Many sports teams, politcal leaders, and military are endorsing it. It really helps focus on why the heck we're here in the first place.
I will pray for your son, be strong and trust in the Lord. Take it from someone that has, it's amazing.

First, thanks to all for the kind words, thoughts and prayers. They're all needed and greatly appreciated.

I've given this some thought while reading the replies. I think that cards and pictures maybe after he's had his surgery and is recovering.

A garage crawl or hot rod lunch would knock his socks off. My buddy takes him out in his '07 Corvette once and a while and you couldn't wipe that grin off his face with 40 grit after a ride. I will talk to him today and see if he would like to do the crawl or lunch some time.

Or it could be as simple as a drive-by when you're out and about in your ride. Hell, if several cars got together and did that, it would make his day.

Does he have an "age level of comprehension" so we could send an appropriate card of encouragement to him. PM me with your address if you'd like. You've got to be a "bullet-proof" family after 17 years of unconditional love. You've got my prayer.

I'm about ready to pull mine apart for the winter. If anyone around here wants to make a run with me I'm up for it. I am on vacation all next week. I just need to hook up the mufflers. St Peters is only a little over an hour away. Keith

    Beemryder,
Like the previous HAMBERS, my heart and prayers are out to your son, you and your family. My son, who is as a big of gearhead than anyone on the HAMB, is the Sales & Marketing Coordinator for the St. Louis Rams and I know that he would be happy as hell to provide your sign with some autographed items for your son if you think that he would like them. I realize that it is not car stuff (which he wants most), but let me know if he would.
Your son is in our prayers, friend.
