Whatever you choose, plan on wheelbase/engine compartment length to fit engine, not a setback firewall...a '29 truck has too little interior stock, and quickly becomes unusable with engine eating up cowl space.

Plenty of early hot rods had inliners.

I'm liking the Ford six and I agree with the person that said hook it up to a T5.

These guys have a T5 adapter specifically for the 54-64 truck setup....

I guess it's just the "granny gear" 1st gear and the fact that it's truck transmission that would bother me.... but, if you are thinking low-buck and don't want to search for a different trans., I'm sure it'd work just fine.

Have you decided which combo you are going with yet??

    Let us know!

Sure seems like you already had your mind made up when you asked the original question.

Go ahead with the six, but no matter how much work you put in it, the best you'll ever do in many people's eyes is.....

    "Cool, for a 6 banger"

  10. I'd say 318/904. Look for a set of 273 valve covers with the finned things on top, and paint up an aluminum single plane with the manufacturer's ID ground off... instant 'Formula S'.

And I wouldn't worry about a 904. It's not a 727, but pretty tough for a little trans, cheap/easy to replace friction materials in, and a good one will last a long time before wearing out in that light a car unless you actively try to destroy it.

Joe, I gotta vote for the FORD: 223 Inline 6 w/ truck 4 speed. Possibly to include Ranger rearend.
    - Pulled running from a '64 pickup. All accessories included. Tuned before removing from truck.

ok i know its not no the list but the old ford fe motors are sill kinda easy to find at doable prices I have found good solid runners for 500 including a fe merc 410. out of the box they are very very strong motors and if you were to fit it right the valve covers would be b******* to the sides of the cowl which i think looks ***s. and it would dog stomp a decent sbc if you get traction..

If you go with the I6, Offy still makes intakes and a finned valve cover. www.offyparts.com

Yes it is, I could send you some more pics if you would like, PM me with your email. I am just finishing it up this fall/early winter, but I was able to put some good miles on it in september and october. Second time out on its own I took it for an hour ride on the highway to the Alterboys show in worchester, MA. I would be happy to help you with any questions or info you need for yours.

You said you are on a budget, so use the Ford. I'm a Chevy guy, but the Ford is so much more unique than another 350.

Hey - thanks for all the input. I have decided to use the Ford 223 L6 and the 4 speed.. And I have decided the direction that I want to take this project.

After reading this thread and this one posted by JimSibley<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_2198760", true); </SCRIPT> I have decided to build something like this:

I can keep the stance that I want by extending the engine into the nose. It's from a 40's Dodge pickup. I still might have to recess the firewall, but only by an inch or so. The radiator might be a trick.

I'll end up using parts from that donor '63 Valiant that I have sitting in my front yard: steering, electrical, petals, maybe the rear end (2.71 gears, I think) or one from a 60's V8 ford car w/ 3.00 gears. Like I said before I don't know much about gearing in the rear end.

This thread has also been helpful - http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=219869

Again, thanks for all the good replies!

LIST OF PARTS I HAVE SO FAR:
    - 1929 Ford Roadster Pickup body, bed, cowl, stanchions.
    - Complete 1940 Ford front end w/ unsplit wishbone.
    - (2) BLC Headlight buckets with trim and a Model A headlight bar.
    - (4) 17" Ford wire wheels
and I just told my buddy that I'll take that 223 + 4 speed.

Time to get to work! I'll keep you posted

I took these a couple of years ago at a local show. I ran a site called www.readersrides.com until I sold it to TEN magazines. They haven't taken over the site yet, so all the old content is there.

Joe, I got a 401 nailhead out of a 64 buick with the trans. I'd trade this for the FORD: 223 Inline 6 w/ truck 4 speed and the Ranger rearend.
PM me Im in Palm Springs and could even motor out your way to do the trade.
