Well, it's time to take my coupe apart. I have had it on the road for a year now. And I couldn't be happier about the way it has performed. I don't know how many miles I have put on it, several thousand at least. Sure it's pretty rough, but I hope to get the body a little better this winter as well as some mechanical updates. Like a '47 Lincoln Zephyr with OD, and rebuild my 59ab so it doesn't smoke quite as much. An Edelbrock super and 97s and possibly some aftermarket heads are on the bench also. The rebuild was predicated by there being "blow by" coming from my catch-can, air/exhaust blowing bubbles out of the coolant. Here's the tired ol girl with the heads and intake removed. (My 6 yr old daughter took off all the head nuts by herself after I loosened them, I soaked it in and enjoyed it rather than run into the house for the camera.) I can't complain about the motor. As some of you know, when I bought the flatty it was stuck. I have never had the pan or intake off of it, just the heads to free some stuck valves. I couldn't find any obvious areas where the blow-by was occuring. It would only do it after I had been driving it for 30 miinutes or so. I do have a couple "burnt" pistons, where the edge looks melted a tiny bit, and #4 has a teeny hole in it too. Maybe THAT'S why I couldn't beat Jeff at the Drags ... My goal is to have it ready for a trip to Bonneville next year. And maybe another trip to Austin for the Roundup...
I feel your pain! Nice car by the way. The last flatty I tore down had about 3 valves burnt. I couldnt afford the rebuild it needed so much.
bah. You up for a roadtrip to the salt Root? I am trying to keep the doors shut when I am not there to keep that one damn hen out! You up for Wendover Kerry?????? No pain, at least not yet. I am looking forward to building a hotrod motor! Nope. Sorry Larry. You'll have to come up here in April again for the HAMB-B-Q. Thanks Todd. You are another one I need to call out for the trip to B-ville....
You're a bad influence Jay, do ya know that? I'm more than tempted but the job situation will dictate.
Jay, it seems you and Jeff (hiboy32) are on the same track, as far as the rebuild goes. He tore his car apart last week! Now you just have to make it a little compe***ive and make sure the both of you make it down to Austin again in the spring! Glad to hear you are doing the rebuild - just makes it a better Hot Rod!! Malcolm
In your picture of the right side of the motor, third hole back, there is a line from the valve to the bore. Check it for a crack. Could be your problem. Neal
it's almost like being there bud. i hope it goes well for you and you smoke jeff at mokan next summer. ball joints in the comet for me on saturday to get it ready for the auction block to make room for a pick up so i can start lugging car parts back to my cellar and build a car under my house. oh, and you'll be in new england in no time. can't wait.
I always like seeing, detailed engine autopsy results! Keep us posted on the work being done. Also, I will be over at some time to make sure that you keep on track on the re-build.
Damn, i was kinda hopeing to see your ugly mug this weekend at Ft. Scott...........Oh well we'll just talk about you instead!
you know, it bothers me a little bit when you act apologetic for this car being 'a little rough.' if people had any idea what this car used to be, they wouldn't have anything to say about it. neither should you. ***end of my public scolding.***
Jay, I would have ever heard the end of it you would have beat me " with a hole in the # 4 piston!" . I am going to get my coupe back together before you and beat you at the drags!!!hahahaha that is one damn fine looking chicken coupe.
Have fun with the rebuild Jay. And I agree with Gow dont make any apologies for your car, not many pieces of cars make it out of the ditch and are made road worthy. Get it together for Roundup I'll cruise with you and Jeff if its ok that me amd my fat fender hang out with you guys.
