This is what we have to go by.We set the rusted pans onto the frame and lined up as many of the body mount holes as possible. I rolled a driveshaft tunnel and welded it together. My partner,Dave started on the area under the rear seat. Then,Dave made the other side and the little tunnel piece.I welded it together. Then,Dave started on the trunk area. Thats all for today.More to come later this week.
those before pics look like the floors in mine,,,,,you guys are doing a great job fabbing up those floors,,how bout making a duplicate set while you're at it,,haha,,, just noticed you guys have the same welder i do,,,that thing kicks ass doesnt it?
So...I'm wondering why you didn't just use that neat kit from POR that fixes your floor with paint and a bit of cloth?? Amazing work! Also amazing that anyone would think to save anything that contained the wretched expanse of brown flakes!
two things....you are doing a beautiful job on the floors,if you are interested paul bradley in charlotte n.c. makes new floors...he just doesnt advertise it because they are not exactly perfect for restorers.the other thing is i hve a decklid for you ...cheap...with your metal skils i beleive you can fix it.the lid is full of rust holes along the top and has a dent toward the bottom. the inner structure is solid though. i know how hard they are to find, just as hard to find someone who needs one.
I don't understand, why did you need to make a new floor for it again? Looks damn good, I might need to come down and borrow your bead roller.
Are you using a shrinker/stretcher for the 90 degree bends that are rediused? Like those that are below and to the side of the rear seat area.
Thanks guys for the compliments.I want it to resemble the Barris built Johnny Zaro 40. Look here. http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_car_photos/beautiful_custom_cars/barris-1/johnny_zaro_40_mercury/
Nice work man, i don't know if i would tackle something that bad. It's good to see guys like you bringing them back.
Great Work! When you showed the picture of the body - I have a HUGE amount of respect for the amount of metal work required to bring this car back. You guys have more ambition than I can imagine -- way to friggin go! I also have a 40 Merc coupe -- am blessed with extremely good steel. I haven't started on the build yet -- it is second or third in line from my current project. Here are some pictures of a fantastic 40 Merc coupe that I saw at Goodguys in Columbus, OH a couple years ago. They did a fantastic job on chopping the top and laying the roof back (in the rear). I have never liked the way the rear of a 40 Merc top transitions into the trunk area -- kind of "half Lincoln". I plan to chop and flow the top of my Merc in a fashion similar to this one. If you guys need any measurements or pictures from vintage/stock 40 Merc. tin - let me know ( mine is almost 100% straight). Here yah go:
mazdaslam, where are the pics of your '50? if i remember correctly it was a pretty rough start too? You've got some SKILLS. Good job saving 'em.
