I read that mopar steering boxes can be used for cowl steering. I did a search but not much came up. Has anybody used a Mopar steering box? If so, what year? I know Ford Ranger boxes can be used are there any other ones? If you have pics please post. Thanks guys

  2. This is the one I'm using. Bought it on eBay at a reasonable price.

Mine will mount to the left, next to the cowl side. No need to extend the output that way. Then I'll use a double U-jointed shaft up to the steering wheel.

I'm using one out of a 63 Chrysler. The ouput shaft is long enough to use without modification. 6 turns lock to lock though so plan on a long pitman arm.

A body, barracuda, dart, should work, small and light. planning on using one in my 17, trying to keep it as MoPar as possible

I have one in mt '27 Track T. I didn't have to extend the shaft, as it is the perfect length for the Speedway body I am using.

WOW!!! Great minds think alike! After some talking with Creepy Jack, I was thinking about this box and just did a search and well... wow... here it is!

BTTT! I want to see more pictures and if you DID extend the output shaft I would like to see how it was done.

This is EXACTLY how I was thinking of laying out my pedals and masters as well!! COOL!! Did you make this setup yourself or is this a retrofit deal?

Anyone know the spline sizes on the input and output shafts on this steering box?

I'd like to see your project. I'm knee deep into a 47 dodge build, but I'm also collecting parts for a modified also. No one really building those around here.

This is a great post. Cowl steering always seemed difficult (reversing boxes) or expensive if you use a dirt track box ($500 +). This is why I love the HAMB.

  14. I cut the splined part off the pitman arm, welded it in a tube large enough for a socket wrench, and am going to fabricate a new pitman out of 1/8" or 1/4". We turned a few thou off so it would pass througH a bearing for extra support where it comes out of the body. It ended up being a huge bearing! I have some pics of the bracket I built to hold the box, more after I install it.

the input spline is 3/4 36 i think. there are 2 different sizes, power is 5/8 i think. i put a universal and extended my column in my dart to switch to manual steering. the aluminum manual box is pretty much the same from the early 60s till whenever they stopped using them. all cars used the same type box, some had bearings some had bushings. now that i think about it there is actually 2 different manual boxes but they will interchange with the right pitman arm.

Do these have to be reversed?

Clay did a great job with that steering extention. I've seen that before. That should totally work for this application as well. Sealing the cowl is really the trick with anything. Was thinking a sprung lip seal would work. Like an axle seal that has the wiper on the I.D. and a spring to keep things snug and sealed.

  20. The steering column adapter is available from Speedway, 3/4"-36 spline to 3/4" smooth bore, you can see it sticking up in the photo above. It doesn't need to be reversed, either.

What other boxes are suitable with out reversing?

    Leon

  22. I think Kiwi Kev is using a VW bus steering box, he did not have to reverse, on his RPU.

Ahhh yes... I remember seeing that now. Did you ever end up putting a seal in there or anything for the cowl??? Thanks for the link!

I believe the "Ranger" box mentioned was actually a box from a FULL SIZE Ford pickup...late sixties or so.
I remember something about it from a previous cowl steering post and the builder corrected the mistake.
I think the full size was a Ranger in name, like a Chevy full size might be a Silverado.

Thing is...I don't know if anyone ever actually tried a Ranger MINI-truck box to see if that worked!

Just something to check over before laying down the ca$h...just in case!
