is there a good company out there that makes a good engine paint , and or hi-temp paint that you have more than 5 colors to chose from? I see the gold engines the green engines, and the typical big 3 colors they used..what are people doing for the custom engine colors? never had a need until now, so im throwing this out there to learn. thanks
go white. Totally impractical and very custom! You can also get ANY color you want mixed up into a rattle can at your local paint shop. Just tell them you want a high temp version. It costs about $20/can
I used a Duron paint desgned for industrial hi temp applications. You also have to use a high temp primer if you want it to last. "Dura Clad" paint Rustoleum makes a heat resistant primer. Afterwards, I think it wold be okay to use the Heat resistan primer, the paint is overkill. The only places youll exceed the temp ratings of most paints is on the heads at the exhaust ports.
I've heard a few times that plain old basecoat with no primer underneath works really well on engines. Apparently even hot-tanking has trouble removing it once it "bakes" itself on.
Bill Hirsch auto has a real good engine paint, it's aircraft quality paint to match alot of the early colors. Spray on or brush on. It was the only place that had the 40-57 Pontiac blue green I needed.
You can use regular automotive paint, your engine does not get hot enough to worry about ANY paint burning off. That is why you see so many different colored engines or engines that just so happen to also match the body color.
cool!..i was mostly worried about the heads..the rest of the block should never get hot enough to burn regular paint. but the heads near the exhaust ports it just might. But now that it has been mentioned i recall seeing alot of engines painted body color and with flake and all that so it just might work.
I've done quite a few base coat clear coat, without any problem, have heard you want to keep the clear coat fairly light so it doesn't hold in a lot of heat. Seems to hold up well.
ahh just use any paint. the new duplicolor stuff seems to work nice and hold up good. i used rust oleum green in the quart and sprayed it on, i wasnt sure how it would hold up to oil and gas and such, of alll things the only thing to lift it so far was a water leak. it holds up great, i only gave it one coat of red oxide primer and one coat of green paint i was in rush. i would think 2 coats of primer and 2 or 3 of paint would hold up really well. comes in a lot of colors too.
Thanks for posting the link, i'm at work, so they have alot of sites blocked off and I couldn't go there. I will say though for a dark blue green i used 2 coats and it covered very well.
Use good paint. Catalyzed. In the past, I've used Centari (with hardener), Imron, Single stage urethane, base/clear, and even House of Kolor Urethane Kandy. They all work well. I've even heard One Shot pinstriping paint works real well. Don't use any lacquer based paint, primer, either. Etching primer, or epoxy, just enough to get coverage, son't load it on. You don't really need primer on the cast iron parts, but it does make the paint look nicer, sheet metal parts need primer. Just be sure everything is super clean, no rust, oil, or grease.
Go to Murray's if you want a decent selection of actual engine enamel in different colors. Duplicolor offers the standard factory colors, plus white, purple, yellow, lime green, etc. I use their engine primer and engine paint on stuff I work on and it goes on nice, looks great and seems to hold up well.
ive used single stage concept a handfull of times clean the motor good and i shot a good sealer first or k36, concept sticks to oil for crying out loud!! i always held up well even on high heat areas like the head ports, any you can get tons of colors,if you search i think this was a topic not long ago as well
Has anyone tried POR-15 engine paint? I was told it brushes on but looks like it was sprayed, something in the makeup or whatever.
I like Plastikote myself. My machine shop guy says the same thing, OEM paint comes right off in the hot tank, aftermarket sticks pretty good.
i been using, Duplicolor engine enamel and hi-heat paint in rattle can, from any auto parts. Here is the color chart http://www.duplicolor.com/products/colors/highheat.html
A bit of a thread resurrection here ... does anyone know of a supplier for an aerosol paint that is close to the old Duesenberg green, as shown in this photo? http://www.jonthecomposer.com/WEB/WEB pics/duesenberg8.jpg thanks Ed N.
