I've been lurking on the board for a while. I thought I would post some pics of my build. I bought the body about a year ago, off of ebay. It showed up a little rougher then I anticipated. I started the build by squaring up the body and replacing the wood with steel (still not done). Once the body was braced I chopped the top (4in. front, 3in. back). After it was chopped I cut the body off the table to set the ride height. When that was set I started to mock up and build the chassis. I am running factory model A rails in front with a magnum 4 in dropped and drilled axel. In the rear I am running a competition engineering 4 link. Front wheels will be Halibrand spindle mounts. The rear wheels are Fenton Gyros. Power will come from a 572 big block chevy with a 871 super charger, backed by a turbo 400. Future plans call for a full roll cage. I plan on painting it burgandy with yellow lexan windows. I am going for a late 60's altered look. Sorry the pics are so big, first time posting pics. If you know how to make them small let me know. -Mat
I love that car!!! Hopefully you'll be posting more...I'm going to subscribe to this...and big pictures are fine for me...eyes are weak
PLEASE do NOT put a 572 in that thing. it wants a 394 and if that's not big enough, build a 455 up for it. the car told me. as an olds guy, i cannot condone your decision. if you need resources for that stuff, i will be more than happy to help. plus, for much LESS than that 572 will cost, you could have nearly 900hp out of a big block olds at normal atmospheric pressure. you wanna go forced induction, still not that hard.
Cool....I love the lines of GM's mid 30's cars, especially the 3 window coupes. Here's a link to the build we're doing on a really rough 1933 Chevy: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=165476 One question though....why is the engine mounted so high? Was that typical for dragsters of the 60's?
cool deal. my buddy and i just rebuilt both doors on a 35 olds. i'll have to dig the pics up tomorrw, something you might wanna see
yes indeeed, why not use a Rocket Oldsmobile engine in your Oldsmobile? blown BBC is a little too "Boyd" if you know what i mean.
There is a couple reasons for the chevy. I all ready have it from a project I sold a few years back. I thought about running some different motors includind early hemi and olds. But its had to get any money out of used parts.
I have looked at your build before very cool. This is an old stock car body too. You can see where the screen was screwed around the front window also the doors were wlded shut. The motor high because I wanted the crazy altred look.
I figured the 396 came out in the fall of 64. Probaly in drag cars by early 65. I'll just say its a 396 . I dont anybody will notice its a tall deck. Also I'm going to bead bast the blower and I have a factory GMC front cover for it. Plus the cal custom valve covers.
I know there are a lot of nay sayers on chevy's big block, but hot rodding didn't end in 1960. If you're building the car in mid to late sixties style (which agree with the ansen sprints) I say let the guy go for it! Using an olds motor would definitely look the part, but to use one just to stay within the brand isn't exactly what hot rodding is about... going fast with scavenged parts is cool too! and if the only 700 horse engine I had in my garage was an Evinrude boat motor, I would use it!
Here's an update. I done rust repair in the cowl. Including making patch panels, fixing the cowl vent and replacing the area below the windshield. I've done more bracing in the cowl. I also got rid of all the temporary bracing. The doors now open and close without sagging. I've been doing all the finish welding on the chassis. The frame is welded on the top and now flipped to finish off the bottom. After that it's going to the media blaster. Should of been the first I did. Anyway heres some pics. Mat
