What modifications are necessary to run the lighter 63-4 timing cover- water pump ***embly on the earlier 59-62 blocks?

I realize that the bolt pattern is different this doesn't mean you can't drill and tap holes as long as the block castings are similar. An old Olds guy told me there is a 30# weight difference between the cast iron and aluminum set ups. I don't mind doing some work, however I do not want to go through all the trouble of scrounging up an aluminum set up if it is going to be phisically impossible to adapt.

what you need is a '63-4 "window" block.

honestly,if you really needed to shave that weight you'd have gotten hold of a MOON timing cover.

but the real reason you don't want it is they're all corroded terribly :(

add to that the 2 year-only water pump is hard to find and expensive, and if the timing tab is broken off of your core they won't take it.

  6. not to mention the earlier pump & cover is way better looking!
