I was talking to an old timer the other day who raced in the 60's, and he was telling me about how he used to mix nitro with gasoline to get an edge on the compe***ion. He also told me about mothballs and benzene. He then proceeded to tell me how his best recipe consisted of gasoline with gunpowder mixed in!!! POW!!!!

    40% - 60% nitomethane

    40% - 60% methanol
    +
    10% benzol
    +
    15% water to prevent detonation

    = fun

    Funny that you mention Nitro...the June '57 Issue of Rod Builder & Customizer had an interesting article about nitro;

There's more if you're interested...mainly warnings about decreased fuel-efficiency, engine knock, and the possibility of "internal corrosion action". It's a good read.

nitromethane does not mix with gasoline. However, Nitropropane #2 does mix with gasoline and produces significant power gains. Just dont use more than 25% Nitropropane #2 or nasty things happen, also retard the timing at least 10 degrees or nasty things will happen. It should go without saying that if you are going to play with exotic fuels forged pistons are a must and the rest of the enginge should be capable of handling the added power, just as you would with nitrous, or forced induction.

Must be an Arthur Anderson employee.

Everyone else has only 100% in their fuel tank,
and you have 145%,it must be faster, right ?

When people start talking about adding Nitromethane,Methanol, etc
do they ever tell you how much richer you have to run ?
And what happens if you don't ?

Seems to me that a 25% mixture of nitropropane#2 required at least an increase of 5 jet sizes. If you want to run straight methanol instead of gasoline will require a significant carb rework as it 2 1/2 times as much methanol as gasoline to make the same power/BTUs. If you dont richen the mixture the mixture the appropriate amount with any fuel the possibilties are melted spark plug electrodes, melted pistons, torched head gaskets and or heads. If the timing is advanced to the point of detonation things get REALLY ugly.

Most people say 2X for Methanol.

Nitro wants to be a LOT richer.

    20% 80% .093 to .098
    25% 75% .096 to .105

if main metering tubes are .187

A sixties kart national champion friend of mine used to go through a complex series of fuel mixing with various size colored jugs and shapes before a race. The point was to throw the compe***ion off, all the while his "speed secret" was an ingeniously obvious mod to the carb diaphragm pump chamber.(Mcculloch 91B1 BDC 14 for the privy) It was worth about 2 or 3 more thou rpm than the status quo. On the fuel note He said there was an old guy with a two stroke mix that was measurably faster than the compe***ion. The old guy died along with the recipe. It was fun to have a chance to talk about my friend Steve's stories, he's one of my heroes.
