Okay so heres the story. Im building a 52 chevy 2 dr sedan g***er, straight axle, pie crusts, the works. Anyway, i never have really understood rear end gearing and what gears are ideal for certain setups. , I plan on using the engine i have which is a 350 built to the same specs as a 70' LT-1 corvette 350 but with ported and polished heads and a pretty old edelbrock crossram intake, etc etc, probly anywhere from 370 to 430 hp. So my question is, what rear end and gearing etc should i use and how much will it cost me?

    Thanks

gearing would depend on what your going to do with it....around town driving...4.10-4.56's...expressway...3.50's..?? race it....4.10 to 5.13's....guessing at best...also application would determine what all you need rearend wise........brandon:D

For a drag car it's hard to argue the 9" ford. Dropout center section makes altering gearing a snap. And all drag cars that evolve will eventually need a different gear.

Gear is determined by a lot of stuff. 1/8 or 1/4, stick or auto and how much stall, tire height, and so on. I'd probably start around 3.90-4.10. Good luck

If you are going for period correct OLDS is the way to go. If it does not matter ford 9 inch. The olds will cost you but it does have the drop out center just like the ford. New centers for the nine inch are a dime a dozen the olds are getting pretty hard to find and quite pricey. Hope this helps. Willy

1/4 mile with 4.88's will put you around 6k at the end.

Jump on the "Richmond" gear web site. They have a calculator you may use if you do not know the formula to determine your gear ratio, ET, etc....

Olds is definately cool, but the 8 3/4 mopar is just as cool, has a nice round back on the housing, and is bullitproof, also it has a better gear selection, you can run a later center and the later posi is real good for the street. they came out in i think 57 0r 58 and were used thru the early 70's
