i have my gas tank mounted in the back of my roadster pick up, and would like to have a simple gauge setup on top of it. i want the gauge vertical so as i can see it from the mirror, or turn my head. i have searched and can find nothing. i thought someone had something like this for sale at one time. any ideas, or leads?
    thanks in advance, pkj

How 'bout using a sight tube instead of a gauge?

The easiest way to go about it is to use a sight tube. Here's a pic of the one in my old truck. You wont be able to check it while driving but if it's that low it's probably too late anyway. ;)

  10. Flush mount on top the tank. Look at the holes around the gauge. It just sits in a hole and seals with the included gasket

  11. 200 gallon oil tanks for heating oil have a very simple gl*** dome and sight tube that mounts to the top of the tank. The gl*** dome is about 1.5" dia. x about 3" high. I'm not sure how the internal mechanism looks, but it could probably be adapted with a bit of hot rod inginuity.

I once saw a tank with a cork float attached to a small br*** rod that ran through a hole in the top of the tank. More rod showing meant more gas in the tank and it goes down with the fuel level.

A trip to your local airport, and look for a Piper J3 Cub. Has a simple wire and cork, Works just like Ratrodhauler is describing.

thanks for all the info. i have the tank mounted and final paint on it, so the side mount site tube will not work. groucho, what you are showing is close to what i want. main thing is i want the gauge vertical, not flat. i swear i saw something for sale once or twice, but since cl***ifieds changed, i cant search back far enough. any other idea's? thanks, pkj

  15. The 5 gallon remote gas tank for my outboard motor on my fishing boat has exactly what you need. A round very low profile gauge that mounts to the top of the tank. Its too snowy out to get into my storage shed right now to take a picture, but drop by your local marina and look at the 5 gallon gas tanks.

Im ***uming that what you mean by mounting vertical is that you want the guage on the side of the tank where you can see it. It would be a simple matter to bend the wire that holds the float so that the travel of the float would be correct no matter what position you had the guage in. If the travel of the float doesnt match the depth of the tank then the wire can also be shortened or lengthened according. That's cool deal. Works like the guage on a LPG tank, which could be made to work too but reads in percentage.

no, not on the side. it will be on the top. all the tank mount gauges, marine are set up so the gauge is flat to the top of the tank like the one groucho pictured above. i want the gauge to be standing up. maybe even some type of sight gl***. i know i have seen this somewhere. i want something differant, but not the whiskey bottle thing. thanks, pkj

My roadster pickup had a sight tube also which was very sufficient. Even simpler is carry a wood dipstick.

  20. I bought one similar to this from someone here on the H.A.M.B., military surplus, except it had a red slug that went up and down for an indicator. It's really pretty slick. I can take a picture, the bag it came in may have some markings on it. I don't remember who had them, but he had a whole case of 'em.

What does the filler neck look like on your tank? Standard 1/4 turn or threaded. I have a spun aluminum tank and didn't add the sight tube prior to filling with gas. Been looking for a gauge for it and never found anything....until I remembered some of my old snowmobiles.....gauge built into the cap with a float. I found one on the Gay for $25 shipped. Looks like this.....They come in 1/4 turn and threaded in various lengths. All depends on your filler neck and tank depth.

I bought one of those too, it works really well and is easy to see except at night. I just turn my head and look at the top of the tank and there it is, not like a guage that you'd have to look straight down at.
If you look at the right side, top of the tank, you can see it sticking up.

It's going on the same type of tank as sold in Speedway. I bought the cap from E-pay. If you want to find em there, type in "gas cap gauge 1/4 turn" and make sure you check "search ***le and descriptions". That will bring up the ones that have the two tabs vs threaded. Then just pick your depth.
