Hello all Im planning to start my 35 chevy project and was wondering since the vin number on my ***le is the engine serial number. How do you handle an engine swap? Thanks Gary
Check your states ***le paperwork. In Cali, theres a spot for an engine number, however, I don't know anyone that bothers. It would help if the car got stolen and parted out.
Put in your new engine and run the car with the paperwork you have. Keep the correct number matching engine in the corner of your garage for as long as you own the car in case the issue ever comes up. If you sell the car, send the engine along and let the new owner decide what to do.
You can also use the body number.Mine came from M***. The M*** ***le had the body number as the vin.Body Number will be on the Cowl tag. Lets see the pics of the car?
I'll check with dmv in NJ Was planning on selling the engine. Im sure im not the only one with this issue. Thanks, Gary
Back in the day the VIN was the engine number, now the VIN is the car/body number. I'm sure you'll be selling the engine without the ***le. So I'd put a "body number" tag on the firewall. Let us know what DMV says.
Lots of NJ guys on here, thats what we need the answer from.. if they don't inspect the car, you don't have anything to worry about.. but it never hurts to stamp the number on the frame somewhere nice and neat, too.
35mastr - As requested below is a picture of the car Early Chevys didnt have a serial number stamped on the frame but I suppose I could stamp the number on the frame and add a serial number plate to the firewall. Hopefully I will hear from some jersey guys. Gary
Wow.How the hell did it let you attach a pic that was tha big.I can never get a pic that big to attach.Right next to the battery box hole on the p*** side should be a tag like this.It should of had the serial number on it.
I have the same plate on my car but the unfortunitly the engine number is the number on my ***le Gary
I guess thats an option. The engine Im rebuilding for the car is a SBC 350 that came from my boat and it has no serial number stamped on the machined surface on the front right of the block. Gary
In Washington they ***led with engine numbers up to 55, so if I have a car with an engine number for the VIN (like my 41 truck) and I have the original engine, I take the car to the state police/VIN inspector and have them verify that the number for the VIN is on the engine and then they can ***ign a new number or take a body number if there is a unique body serial number tag available. I've had this done a couple of times, but the original engine has to be in the vehicle before the inspection. If you don't have a verifiable VIN anywhere because the engine is missing, then you have to go by your own DMV regs. Good luck.
Here in NC I took just my engine over to the state inspector's office after my ***le application was denied for having a 5 digit VIN. He verified the engine number and the state gave me my ***le. The car had no ch***is numbers or VIN plate so I had one made at a trophy shop so I didn't have to lug around an extra engine.
It almost seems that as long as there is a number stamped somewhere on the vehicle, frame, engine or a rivited on plate I will be fine Gary
