Two more sets of headers from my warped mind. Be popular, tell all your friends you've seen headers built by the least famous person you'll ever know. These are on a Hemi powered '32 Plymouth PB Coupe And these on a '56 Cameo with a 348 W
Believe it or not, the first set primaries are only 33" long. It's a Hilborn Stack injected 392. Brother, one thing I don't question is Ted at Opel Engineering. When Andy from Hilborn and Ted gave me specs that almost matched on the money for the tubes, that's what I built! I'm no parts matcher when it comes to engine internal anatomy, so I trust Teds' 40 years. So, in answer to your question (more directly), the '32 Plymouth has a 392 stuffed in between stock '32 Plymouth rails and it's fendered. So the headers had to be sandwiched in between the rail and the side of a Hemi, along with the starter and the steering shaft. Oh, and it had to end BEFORE the inner frame rail and also clear the lower control arm for the front suspension. I told the owner, "no problem."
I use Stahl collectors. You can get them with a couple of different length collector tubes, I think up to 16". Here are the Plymouth ones in the car:
Makes me want to go throw rocks at my headers... When I build mine, I tack teh whole header together, then pop each tube off for full welding, then stick em all back together again. Is there a better way??? Nice work, -Abone.
A better way, probably not. Everyone is different. But I weld as I go and just plan as best I can. Sometimes you end up building from the head, and then at some point where you'll be able to weld all the way around the tube, you start building from the collector. Equal lengths are a bit different in that you've got to know how long each section is as you assemble a primary. And you've got to decide on what your personal tolerance will be. Mine is within 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch for all the tube lengths to be the same. Do I always make that? No, but most of the time I get pretty close. Dropping a hit of acid usually helps you see where each tube is going to go too. (NO! I don't really do that.)
Kevin, Amazing work on the headers dude!! I really enjoy building headers, seeing your artwork is an inspiration. Jimmy White
So, you going to do a header build tech? Like to see something like this in process....long as your doing it. Gene
Yeah, I could do that. I've got a set on Stripped for Action I have to build. But it's not going to be during Tech Week. If that's ok with you guys and Ryan, I'll put one up.
