I'm looking for a reputable salvage yard, preferbaly near Paramount Ca to buy SBC's perhaps a few BBCs complete drivelines from. Anyone here do that or someone you know that is trust worthy.
Yard pickers will always get the Big-Blocks first. That shipper you use is amazing Pete- Lots of tin headed out of this country.
Full serve and/or self serve yards? There's an Ecology Auto and 2 Pick Your Parts in Wilmington, 10 miles from Paramount- all self serve, as in bring your tools. Thanks, Kurt
I have them, but I sell all motors as cores. They might run, they will rotate. Some may have accessories, but I usually sell them as long blocks. I'm sure you are not new to this exporting engine thing, but the market in So Cal has been sewn up for years by your fellow exporters. Most self service yards pull ANYTHING that runs before the car goes out. Some pull all v8 motors. All those places have containers sitting on site to fill for their buyers. You wont get too many big blocks, unless you buy the whole vehicle yourself and pull it. I've had maybe 2 in as many years. I've gone through a couple thousand cars in that time.
Thanks for the input - as usual I thought it might be a little easier then it will be Need full service.
Somewhere besides Southern California may still be a good source for what you are seeking. I don't know what the freighting difference is out of the east coast or Texas coast.. I would think other enterprising fellows have sewn that up too.. But maybe not.
Haha! That's funny! Ask me about about the amputee's leg/pawn shop story sometime. Anyway, I was going suggest desertratrodder BUT if he doesn't have it, very few, if any, will have them. BBCs just aren't around like they used to be. Even running 350s are $800-$1000! It's kinda right-place-right-time thing these days. A guy down the street sold just yesterday a running '76 3/4 ton with a 454 for $500. Ran like shit but it did run.
I can't figure out why anyone would pay $1K for a worn out 350 you'd need to rebuild when you can get a brand new crate 350 for under $2?
If you sell something for your price, what difference does it make what the buyer does with it?? Use it, sell it, light it on fire and do a dance around it.. I have guys that I know that won't sell stuff to me because they think that if I want it, it must be worth more than I'm paying.. They might miss out on a few bucks..and they still have it.. I'll tell you this.. I have had my wrecking yard for 2 years now. Not one "local" has come in to buy a small block chevy motor. Alot of them were runners when pulled. So do I wait for you to come and buy, or sell to an overseas buyer? They typically dont give a hard time about prices, if its what they want. A buyer is a buyer. Old saying money talks and bullshit walks applies in my business. And the stuff I buy on here, I hoard. I'm not Howard Hughes.. I'm the "I'm gonna need that one day" guy...
I'm stealing your heritage boys, one 3 window body and SBC at a time - and forcing up prices - but dont tell anyone.
Pete....I was bringing engines, trannies, performance gear and body panels into NZ in the 70's and early 80's so I'll give you a bit of advise. You seem to be trying to set up bringing gear in to flick on and if I remember correctly from another thread you've already had a couple of paid the money and not got the goods problems. I get the feeling that you have looked at the good exchange rate and thought shit this is a easy way to make a buck. First real important thing is you can't do it by remote control. Get on a plane and go over and check things out. When myself and business partner first started buying we used to fly over and drive thousands of miles loking for good engines and parts. Eventually we built up a network of trusted suppliers and used to only go over a couple of times a year but it took a lot of bloody hard work to get it all set up. You are up against guys who have been doing this for years. If you are going to make this work you are going to have to work your arse off and spend a lot of money up front. It will not be easy and there will always be things like currency movements etc to make it harder. I hope it works out for you but it isn't going to happen sitting behind a computer.
Exactly my thoughts.I used to do this myself and you need to invest in a plane ticket and meet you suppliers.
Thanks guys. Not really trying to start a business as such, just trying to offset some costs of buying personal toys. The two deals that have gonne bad certainly have taught me a thing or two. I'd happily go back to the US (have lived there in Colorado on a few occassions) but the INS and I dont see eye to eye on that matter
