I had the Evel doll with the motorcycle as a kid in the 70's, also the Evel Helmet for skateboarding. Man, I was obsessed with this guy.
    RIP.

Here's something I wrote honoring Evel a while ago:

    http://positiveapeindex.blogspot.com/2006/03/you-stay-classy-america.html

"Of course, if the subject under discussion is that of heroes dedicated to commiting acts of complete insanity involving internal combustion, lack of concern for life and limb, and white-toothed, white trash showmanship, then you need go no further than the apotheosis of the breed, Evel Knievel. He is the end point of the evolutionary line, the Tyrannosaurus Wrecks that tests the sustainable limits of the ecosystem. After he is gone, only small furry rodents remain."

Man, growing up in Texas in the 70's, the only guy cooler than Evil Knievel was Roger Staubach.

"They started out watching me bust my ass, and I became part of their lives," Knievel said. "People wanted to associate with a winner, not a loser. They wanted to associate with someone who kept trying to be a winner."

  17. One of my childhood hero's for sure. He's the reason I took the shocks and spring fork of my Orange Crate, it wouldn't stick when it landed worth a damn with all that crap. After that, every piece of wood in sight went to building ramps. When I heard he was going to jump some "canyon", I remember going to our encyclopedias and finding a pic of probably the Grand Canyon, I remember thinking "oh man, he can never make that, he'll die for sure, he really is crazy!."

No one can ever say he didn't pack it full.

    RIP Evel :(

  23. He was an asshole to a lot of people in his life, but to me growing up, I thought he was truly the king. He is the most influencial figure of my childhood outside of family.

"Whether I splat against the canyon wall, or just lay down and die as an old man. I'll just be getting somewhere sooner, where you're gonna be someday. And I'll be there, waiting for you." E.K.

Tough career choice.....Trying to stay alive while the audience came to see you die. I wonder if he would've rather died doing what he loved.....sure came close a couple times. Crazy mofo

he rode bikes and women..and drank a lake of booze....the rest of the time he wasted..
