Options for Small ford bolt pattern slim 16" rims?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dubbzilla, Nov 30, 2007.

  1. I'm wondering if there is a readily available and affordable make of 16" wheel for a small ford bolt pattern. They need to be narrow enough for a 7.00x16 tire.
    thanks!

    What about late 40's Plymouth/Dodge?

  3. That'll work?

  4. Pickup's or cars? Or does that matter?

Take a look at the spare tire rim that came with the late 80/ 90 jeep wrangler , 6 cylinder model. It is a 16 rim 5 on 4 1/2 with the look of ford rims of the 40's. They are 4" wide at the rim. The only problem I can see is that you will have is mounting hubcaps.

    1949 Ford 16" wheels.
Not too hard to find. Most shoe box Ford guys want to run the 15" wheels.
Then you can run the cool 1951 Ford hubcaps .

Here is a roadster with the 50 caps.
    Ol' Bud's car.

the inter truck ones are pretty much visually identical to 40-48 ford wheels, even take the hubcap with no problems. i run them on my car to use a mustang 8" and match the early ford fronts.

  13. The question is then...who has a pair they'll part with for not a whole lot of money? International or eary mopar?

I've been told Divco are the best way to go, but they are tough to find and expensive unless you find an old dairy or ice cream delivery truck at a salvage yard and an owner who doesn't know any better (if that's possible). We actually have a place like this in VA, but no Divco's. I've got 4.5 bolt pattern on my rod and I'm using early International 16" wheels for my 6.00 tires - look just fine - skinny. I got them at a junkyard in VA for $25 each. I'm not sure what year they are because they were already off the vehicle when I got them.

The 1941-1949 International K/KB series wheels are 16" 5x4.5 Bolt patten and will take early ford hub caps (K-1-K2, KB-1-KB-2), also 1950-about 1955 L/R/S series internationals also. The earier 1939-1940 D series Internationals have similar wheels but have hub cap clips like the mopar wheels and not nubs built into the wheels like the later IH wheels.

I was just going through this delima with my 8" Ford rear end with 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern. BUT if you can't find wheels, is there any axles that you could swap out with the 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern? I've been meaning to get down to the auto parts store to check out this option.

'94-'04 Mustangs came with 16" steel or aluminum mini-spares wheels but would need a hub cap or moon discs. They are 16x4.5" with 5x4.5" bolt pattern. Cobra's, and other cars with the factory big brakes had 17" mini spare wheels. Also 5x4.5" pattern.

BTW, Wheel Vintiques sells 16x4.5", 16x6" and 16x7" steel wheels in 5x4.5", 5x4.75" and 5x5.5" patterns. Brand new. Our own wheelkid probably does too.

What I can't seem to find are aftermarket 16" steelies that are not dual-pattern.........

I didn't want to run caps, and don't like seeing the dual-pattern thing:confused:

I'll have to give wheelkid a call

i dont know if there is enough room, but consider redrillng you axles to a new pattern, i do this at home all the time.

I think the early 70s Broncos came with an 8" rear end with a 5x5.5 bolt pattern. I think the axles could be swapped out.

Dubbzilla, don't mean to hi-jack your post here...just sounds like we're going through the same thing right now.

Yea, I have thought about this.... just rotate the pattern to an area that hasn't been drilled? Do you fill the old holes?

That's what I've heard also. I will varify the widths at the parts shop to see if a direct swap over is a possibility. Thanks guys!

Ahhh yes. I understand. I hate the dual pattern as well. Looks terrible.

The wheel vintiques 5x5.5" is a single pattern. But that don't help this case.

If you can find a mate for it I have a 16" '49 wheel. They are 4.5 wide with the small pattern. I even have it boxed as I had it sold and the fellow ran out of money before he got to me. lol It's very nice, still has the original trim ring.

PM me if you are interested.

  30. No worries Jones, it's all good info for me too. I have an early 9" posi that came out of a drag car I bought. The guys changed the carrier and the axles for racing, but now its a small bolt pattern...not the rear end's original bolt pattern.

I'm in the same boat as most others...we don't like multilug!! Somebody please produce a 40 ford steelie with a small bolt pattern ...(wheelkid) hint hint, haha.

I was wondering about what old dirt tracker said too. That wouldn't weaken the axle would it? Having all those holes drilled in it?
