OK.. Some of you folks that have done this I need to hear from you. I have a pickup that I chopped the rear of the cab 1",... and the front A post about 2-1/2" I'm getting a sneaky feeling the original holes where the mounts for the wiper are go will now be in the wrong place and need to be moved.... some of you other folks that have chopped tops,.. what have you run into. Had to move the arm mounting location..?? Right now the mounting stub is 8 inches from the drivers side, and 14-1/2 inches from the middle of the gl*** )I have a truck that has two separate pices of windshield gl***. It is a 13" opening from bottom to top. All these measurement are from steel to steel. Just common sense kinda tells me that with it being 8" on one side and 14+ on the other... I need to move the mounting location..?? Thats why I wanted to jump in and ask folks that had lowered the lid, see what other adjustments they had to make. DOn't want to ***ume and put this back in the original location,.. then have to move it. Any and all suggestions and info appreciated
Be carefull--The wiper does not swing an equal distance on each side of the pivot post on some vehicles. It goes from laying parallel to the bottom of the gl*** up to 90 degrees, then only a few degrees past the 90 before it returns to start over. Can you put an arm on the motor and hot wire it to check its travel?
OH I should of mentioned.. I have "Speciality Window Products" as my wiper kit. It has an adjustment that allows the travel to be from 90* to 160*. STill I know what you mean. Where the wipers park will be the starting point
What make, style of pickup? Couple things you can do on the older flat window wonders is to shorten the wiper arm. You can also shorten the blade. If it's a Deuce era car with a fairly short windshield you can shorten the top of the blade proper. The blade which was small to begin with doesn't do a whole lot of good, but it makes the Gendarmes happy. Get in the habit of keeping the windshield Rain-X'd. Rain-X really works well, I use it on all my cars and hardly ever use the wipers above 35 mph. You may be able to see how short the top of the wiper blade is on my 2" chopped 32 roadster in the pic.
You may be able to see it in these pics. I don't have any good close-up pics of the wiper from the outside.
thanks for the replies so far... Should of posted this does on a '46 M series Studebaker pickup... That has two separate pieces of gl*** for the windshield was a chrome piece separating the two pieces down the center... The window is 13" from top to bottom now (steel to steel) so Iam guessing when I put in the seal that holds in the gl*** I'll loose an inch off the bottom and another off the top. I figure I'll probably end up with about a 10" wiper blade... but thats just my guess, and I really have no clue. Those that have done this swap before would be more knowledgeable. The gl*** will lie flat, and I'm currently going throw the process of having to cut out for and mount the studs that the wiper arms mount to. The instructions call for it to be "X" inches from the window, and at a 90* angle to the gl***. The factory hole doesn't meet those specs, and so I have to drill a new hole. Trying to find out pretty close WHERE I need to put a new hole, and don't end up with the cowl drilled with holes looking like swiss cheese.. LOL I also should say this is gonna be a daily driver,.. and I need to make sure the wipers a pretty reliable and 100% functional.
I was curious... Are there several types of wiper arms..?? I suppose there are just plain 'straight' ones... but are there ones with a turn or bend at the bottom of the arm,... kinda thinking of something that will make the wiper either lay down straight or stand up straight when it is parked
Wiper arms are out there that adjust length and angle of the blade. I have one set I use on my chopped 49 Merc and they also will fit My chopped 51 F-1 with a slight adjustment...........OLDBEET
