Hi all, I am looking at making an odd combination here. I have a 283 block, same casting as a sm journal 327. I am looking at using a sm journal 327 crank, 307 pistons .060 over. I have some 265 power pack heads but will probably go with either some 305 heads or some Vortecs. I plan to use this all with a TPI intake and 700R4 going into my 63 Chevy II 4 door. Looking for about 8.5 to 9.5 compression ratio.Need some recomendations for a cam for it (flat tappet hydraulic, or hydraulic roller) and any help ya'll can offer on the build itself and what kind of performance I might expect. I am just looking for a good reliable driver not something to take to the drags. Thanks ya'll.
im planning on building the same thing but im gonna have 11 to 11.5 comp. i have a 700 plus lift cam thats hydrolic im goin to use and a set of heads that have been milled down i was talkin to a engine builder about it and he said ill easly have 425 to 475 horse and it will be an rpm motor. i have everything thing to put the motor together expect the bearing and and rings....if i member right mines gonna be like a 301 or 302 same thing as a 67 camaro?
You will need to decide which heads you are going to use, to get the compression up a bit you can use dome pistons. ? Why do you want to go .060 over? Why not use a alum. intake & a nice carb? You are going to need some specifics before you start thinking cam. OR - you could always buy a new GM 350 & add a better cam to it along with a few other things.....you would come out ahead dollar wise, engine wise, just my 2 cents worth - either way - good luck!
Just looking at using the parts I have laying around. Definately want to use the TPI rather than a carb. I will probably use the 305 heads, but the Vortecs are a viable option. The .060 over is because the block is already at .040 over and I planned to just have it bored to .060 over. Don't need the power of a 350. Honestly a 305 would b just perfect for what I have in mind, but the 305 TPI engine I have is FUBAR and since I have all the parts except the pistons sitting around I figured building the 307 would be a good alternative.
Well that makes sense then - and if your just looking for a mild cam then you might want to consider something like a Comp Cams 260H which they "recomend for tow vehicles and family sedans looking for great torque and throttle response with a smooth idle". When you have a valve job done on your heads you can have them do a three angle valve job & also mill the heads mildly (flat surface & a little tad more in the compression dept). Depending on what you want to do, check out the www.northernautoparts.com site for some ideas.....
I was going to do something similar and did a lot of research. If you run Vortec heads you will need a different base manifold for the TPI which is $400. They don't list it in their catalog just online but Summit has a version of their 1102 cam with 114 Deg LSA for use with EFI. It would be a good choice for what you are planning. I'd put a 200-4R in it, it will fit the Deuce a LOT better than a 700R4 and has a more even gear spread. With some 3.55 gears I'd be willing to wager it could get easy 14 second 1/4's and MPG's in the low 20's. A real fun ride. I still have the TPI stuff I bought, who knows I may still use it someday. Maybe I could adapt it to the 289 in my Stude.... yeah, RIGHT! Did a DD2000 on a 60 over 307 with 9.0 to 1 comp., '416 305 heads, 1102 EFI cam and TPI. It made 306 HP at 5,000 and 355 LbFt at 4000 with a fairly flat TQ curve. That would pull an early Chevy II real nicely!
Anyone have an opinion on which would be best for this build, Vortecs, 305 heads, or 283 power pack heads (ported and polished)
If any of you remember, the 307's were factory slugs. The 283 would outpull and outrun the 307 in most forms. Real street with a TPI, forget port polishing if it's destinend to run mostly under 3000 rpm. Small CID, no larger than 1.94/1.50 heads on the real street. For TPI, electronic fuel injection needs 16" vacuum, study cam catalogs with EFI cams. You will notice 112 to 116 degrees overlap. Good ol' cheap "blue racer" cams in Speedway make a good pickup or EFI cam. The new fast burn heads require other than garden variety rockers, intakes, etc. But they will gain in fuel efficency, HP, and torque, out of the box. Just think, the last 283's were put in truck in 1965. Today is damn near 2008. Keep the good old legend alive.
307's can be made to rock. There is a thread on this if you do a search you might find it. They are NOT the doorstops a lot of people claim they are.
Having logged my share of seat time behind both back in the 70's I don't remember it that way at all. Yeah a 307 Bel Air with stock 2 Bbl., single exhaust, PG and 3.08 gears was no rocket ship but neither was a 283 in the same car. Even the 327 4 Bbls. were slugs in a full size Chevy with a Glide and 3.08's, I had enough of them to remember it well. Do the normal intake and exhaust mods to a 307, slip a mild cam in it and give it a decent drivetrain in a light car and it's a whole different story. I recall several 307 '68-'72 Novas running around here back in the day with aluminum intakes, 600 Holley carbs, headers and 3.73 or 4.11 gears that ran pretty damn good.
Well I am thinking that the "boat anchor" 307 will do just fine for what I need, yet still have a little kick to the seat of the pants as well. Which head would you recommend? Would the power pack heads do well? Or should I go for the 305 or Vortec heads?
I put a set of 64 cc Vortecs on my 307 with a Comp Cams dual energy 265 cam. Performer intake, Edelbrock 600cfm carb, Flowtech headers and exhuast recurved distributor and I used steel shim headgaskets and roller rockers. It cackles at idle, pulls great through the midrange and is very lively and streetable. But then.......some people think they ain't worth a fuck....LOL.
I already built that motor for a daily driver camaro I had! 316ci, 283 block - 60 over, 30/30 forged 327 crank, and ebay 307 pistons with a set of 53cc 601 casting 305 heads that I ported. 204/214 camshaft, and a performer intake with eddie 600cfm carb, and headers. Great little motor - good gas milage and ran pretty good in the 3700lb car with 3.42 gears.
I skimmed so forgive me if this has been said. The 327 crank won't swing in an earlier block without some work. I think around 61-62 was the split. We used to run one in a dirt car, comes out to 317 I think. It ran like stink with 462 casting power pack heads. Today I would probably find some of those 305 HO heads. Small chambers and a great runner design I'm told.
The jig is up!! the 307 was the original "stroker small block" and the best-kept secret for cheap fun! A long time ago I had a 100K mile 307, threw on a set of power pack heads, an L79 cam, iron 4 bbl intake, tweaked q-jet and headers. Had a turbo350, 3500 converter and 3.42 gear in a 4000 lb truck- it FLEW. Low rpm power was a little soft, but over 3800-wow! No kidding. Most bang for the buck ever. As I recall the key was getting the advance curve dialed in because with that compression it didn't like pump gas. It was a pain installing the accessories with those heads too. but I'd do it again......
If your going to have to rebuild your heads, I'd cut to the chase and buy new vortecs. I don't think you can rebuild heads the right way for the cost of vortecs with the cost of machine work. Not to mention there is over 50 years of development in them. They out flow the original bowtie heads with small valves!!!! Lots of port velocity, great torque.
